Background of the study:
In Ikeduru Local Government, cultural perceptions play a significant role in shaping health behaviors and influencing the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Traditional beliefs, myths, and community narratives often affect the willingness of women to seek timely medical intervention, as cultural stigma and misconceptions may lead to delays in diagnosis (Okoro, 2023; Eze, 2024). Recent studies have highlighted that the interplay between indigenous knowledge systems and modern healthcare approaches can determine treatment outcomes and survival rates (Chukwu, 2023). Community attitudes towards cancer are frequently rooted in historical experiences and social norms, making public health education and culturally sensitive interventions imperative. Researchers note that the integration of culturally informed practices with biomedical approaches could enhance early detection rates and improve adherence to treatment regimens (Nwankwo, 2025). Additionally, the socio-economic context, gender dynamics, and the influence of local leadership further complicate health-seeking behavior. Understanding these cultural dimensions is crucial for developing effective health policies and targeted awareness campaigns that resonate with local beliefs while promoting evidence-based practices (Afolayan, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Despite advancements in breast cancer screening and treatment, many women in Ikeduru delay seeking care due to cultural misconceptions and social stigma. This delay contributes to late-stage diagnoses and poorer prognoses. The gap between modern medical practices and cultural beliefs continues to hinder early detection and effective treatment, calling for a critical investigation into these cultural barriers (Okeke, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the influence of cultural perceptions on breast cancer detection.
  2. To evaluate the impact of traditional beliefs on treatment-seeking behaviors.
  3. To propose culturally sensitive interventions for early detection.

Research questions:

  1. How do cultural perceptions affect the timing of breast cancer detection?
  2. In what ways do traditional beliefs influence treatment decisions?
  3. What strategies can bridge the gap between cultural practices and modern healthcare?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Cultural perceptions significantly delay early detection of breast cancer.
  2. Traditional beliefs negatively impact the uptake of modern treatment.
  3. Culturally tailored health interventions will improve early detection rates.

Significance of the study:
This study will provide insights into the cultural barriers that affect breast cancer management, guiding policymakers and healthcare providers in designing effective, culturally sensitive interventions. It is anticipated to contribute to reduced mortality and enhanced public health outcomes by aligning health services with community values (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to cultural perceptions and their impact on the early detection and treatment of breast cancer in Ikeduru Local Government. It does not extend to other regions or diseases.

Definitions of terms:

  • Cultural perceptions: Shared beliefs and values that influence behavior.
  • Early detection: Identification of disease at an initial, more treatable stage.
  • Treatment adherence: The extent to which patients follow prescribed medical advice.
