Background of the Study
Christianity’s influence has reshaped many cultural expressions, including traditional music, in Awgu. Historically, indigenous music served ritualistic, social, and entertainment purposes. With the spread of Christianity, many of these musical traditions have been adapted for worship and religious celebrations. Traditional tunes and instruments are now often incorporated into Christian services, leading to a fusion of indigenous and religious musical styles. While this synthesis has created innovative expressions, it has also raised concerns about the loss of authentic indigenous musical forms. Recent studies reveal that the integration of Christianity into traditional music has both enriched and transformed local musical landscapes (Okeke, 2023; Ezenwa, 2024). This study examines the extent of this influence and its implications for cultural identity (Ijeoma, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Christianity’s growing influence in Awgu has led to significant modifications in traditional music, potentially diluting its indigenous character. The adaptation of folk tunes and rhythms to fit Christian liturgical contexts may erode the cultural and historical significance of traditional music. This transformation raises questions about the preservation of authentic musical heritage and the impact on cultural identity. There is limited empirical research on how these changes affect the community’s cultural expression. This study addresses the gap by evaluating the impact of Christian influences on traditional music and exploring measures to preserve indigenous musical forms.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of Christianity on traditional music.
  2. To assess changes in musical practices due to religious influences.
  3. To propose strategies for preserving indigenous musical heritage amid religious transformation.

Research Questions:

  1. How has Christianity influenced traditional music in Awgu?
  2. What changes have occurred in traditional musical practices due to religious influences?
  3. How can indigenous musical heritage be preserved in the context of Christian adaptation?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Christianity significantly influences the adaptation of traditional music.
  2. Religious influences contribute to the transformation of indigenous musical practices.
  3. Preservation strategies can mitigate the loss of traditional musical heritage.

Significance of the Study
This study underscores the complex interplay between religion and culture by exploring Christianity’s impact on traditional music in Awgu. The findings will inform cultural and educational policies aimed at preserving indigenous musical heritage while accommodating evolving religious expressions (Okeke, 2023; Ezenwa, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of Christianity on traditional music in Awgu Local Government, Enugu State, and does not extend to other cultural expressions.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Traditional Music: Indigenous musical expressions rooted in cultural heritage.
  2. Christianity: A monotheistic religion that influences cultural practices.
  3. Cultural Transformation: The process by which cultural practices are altered due to external influences.
