Background of the study
Traditional dietary practices in Nsukka have long been integral to community health, particularly in managing chronic conditions such as sickle cell disease (SCD). Indigenous diets, rich in locally available nutrients and herbal components, are believed to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life for individuals with SCD (Uche, 2023). These dietary practices are embedded in cultural traditions and are often recommended by traditional healers. Recent research suggests that specific foods and dietary patterns may reduce inflammation and improve hemoglobin levels (Ibrahim, 2024). Despite the growing interest in nutritional therapies, scientific evaluations of these practices remain limited. This study investigates the role of traditional dietary practices in managing SCD, examining community adherence, nutritional benefits, and potential risks, thereby providing a critical assessment of these culturally informed strategies (Chukwu, 2025).
Statement of the problem
In Nsukka, reliance on traditional dietary practices for managing sickle cell disease raises concerns about consistency, nutritional adequacy, and potential health risks. While many patients report symptomatic relief, the lack of standardized guidelines and clinical validation creates uncertainty about long-term outcomes (Uche, 2023; Chukwu, 2025). This discrepancy between traditional beliefs and scientific evidence necessitates a thorough evaluation of dietary interventions to ensure safe and effective management of SCD, addressing gaps in both research and practice.

Significance of the study
This study is significant in bridging cultural dietary practices with clinical nutrition, providing evidence-based insights into the management of sickle cell disease. The findings will support healthcare providers in developing culturally appropriate and nutritionally sound interventions, ultimately improving patient care (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the role and impact of traditional dietary practices on managing sickle cell disease within Nsukka Local Government, focusing solely on indigenous nutritional approaches.
