Background of the study
Spiritual healing centers have long been an integral part of indigenous healthcare systems in Nigeria, offering alternative methods of treatment, especially in the context of drug addiction recovery. In Ilaje Local Government, these centers provide culturally grounded interventions that incorporate rituals, prayers, and traditional counseling to facilitate recovery (Ola, 2023). The integration of spirituality and healing addresses both physical and psychological dimensions of addiction, reflecting the community’s holistic approach to health (Adebayo, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these centers remains debated among healthcare professionals due to the lack of empirical data and standardized practices (Folorunso, 2025). This study explores the role of spiritual healing centers in addressing drug addiction, examining their methodologies, community perceptions, and the balance between spiritual and conventional medical treatments.
Statement of the problem
Ilaje Local Government faces a growing challenge with drug addiction, and the reliance on spiritual healing centers as a primary mode of recovery raises questions regarding their effectiveness and safety. The absence of standardized treatment protocols and empirical evaluations has led to mixed outcomes, complicating the integration of spiritual healing with modern addiction recovery programs (Ola, 2023; Folorunso, 2025). This study seeks to address these gaps by critically assessing the role of spiritual healing centers and identifying factors that influence their success in drug addiction recovery.
