Background of the Study:
Literacy in indigenous languages is vital for preserving cultural identity and transmitting artisanal skills. In Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, artisans rely on indigenous languages to pass down technical knowledge and traditional craftsmanship. However, the growing influence of global languages challenges the retention of indigenous language literacy among these skilled craftspersons (Okon, 2023; Udo, 2024). Recent research indicates that proficiency in indigenous languages bolsters creativity and cultural preservation (Ekanem, 2023). The decline in indigenous literacy could lead to a loss of artisanal techniques and cultural heritage. Integrating indigenous language education into vocational training may enhance both cultural continuity and economic empowerment (Imoh, 2024).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the recognized importance of indigenous language literacy for artisans, limited data exist on actual literacy levels in Nsit Atai. The increasing dominance of global languages risks marginalizing traditional skills and compromising cultural heritage (Udo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the current levels of indigenous language literacy among artisans.
  2. To determine the impact of indigenous literacy on artisanal skills and cultural preservation.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing indigenous language literacy in vocational settings.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the current level of indigenous language literacy among artisans in Nsit Atai?
  2. How does indigenous language literacy influence the quality and transmission of artisanal skills?
  3. What strategies can improve indigenous language literacy among artisans?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Higher indigenous language literacy correlates with improved artisanal craftsmanship.
  2. Artisans with strong indigenous literacy better preserve traditional techniques.
  3. Targeted literacy programs will enhance indigenous language proficiency among artisans.

Significance of the Study:
This study underscores the critical role of indigenous language literacy in sustaining artisanal skills and cultural heritage. Its findings will guide educational and policy initiatives, benefiting artisans, educators, and cultural policymakers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating indigenous language literacy among artisans in Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. It focuses on literacy practices, skill transmission, and cultural impact. Limitations include reliance on self-reported measures and exclusion of broader demographic factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Indigenous Language Literacy: The ability to read and write in a native language.
  2. Artisans: Skilled craftspersons engaged in traditional cultural crafts.
  3. Cultural Heritage: The legacy of cultural knowledge, practices, and traditions passed through generations.
