Background of the Study:
Language contact—when speakers of different languages interact—has profound effects on phonological structures. In Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State, contact between indigenous languages and dominant languages has led to noticeable phonological shifts, such as the borrowing of phonetic elements and altered pronunciation patterns (Ogunleye, 2023; Akinola, 2024). Increased exposure to dominant languages can both enrich and challenge the phonetic integrity of indigenous languages (Olatunji, 2023). Traditional phonological elements, such as vowel harmony and intonation patterns, may be modified due to these influences. Moreover, bilingualism and urbanization further mediate these changes, impacting language evolution (Balogun, 2023; Adekunle, 2024). Understanding these shifts is critical for language preservation efforts and contributes to broader linguistic theory.

Statement of the Problem:
Indigenous languages in Ilesa East are increasingly influenced by contact with dominant languages, leading to shifts in phonological patterns that risk eroding traditional phonetic characteristics (Akinola, 2023). The limited research on how these contacts specifically affect phonology leaves a gap in both academic understanding and preservation initiatives.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze phonological changes in indigenous languages resulting from language contact.
  2. To identify specific phonetic features affected by language interactions.
  3. To assess sociolinguistic factors mediating phonological adaptations.

Research Questions:

  1. What phonological changes are observable in indigenous languages due to language contact?
  2. Which phonetic features are most influenced by interactions with dominant languages?
  3. How do sociolinguistic factors like bilingualism affect these phonological adaptations?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Language contact leads to significant phonological changes in indigenous languages.
  2. Bilingual speakers exhibit greater phonological adaptation than monolingual speakers.
  3. Sociolinguistic factors significantly influence the degree of phonological shifts.

Significance of the Study:
This study deepens our understanding of language evolution by examining the phonological impact of language contact. Its findings will inform language preservation strategies and guide efforts to maintain linguistic heritage in the face of global influences.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to exploring the effects of language contact on the phonology of indigenous languages in Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State. It focuses on phonetic features and sociolinguistic factors, with limitations including speaker variability and geographical focus.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Language Contact: Interaction between speakers of different languages resulting in linguistic exchange.
  2. Phonology: The study of a language’s sound systems and patterns.
  3. Indigenous Languages: Native languages of a particular community.
