Background of the Study
Globalization has significantly influenced indigenous language usage in Awka South, leading to a notable decline in traditional linguistic practices. Exposure to global media, international trade, and digital communication has accelerated the adoption of dominant global languages, marginalizing indigenous languages that once flourished in the region (Chukwuemeka, 2023). This shift not only alters communication patterns but also impacts cultural identity, as language is a primary medium for expressing local traditions and values (Nwachukwu, 2024). The forces of globalization introduce new lexicons and communication norms that challenge the retention of indigenous linguistic nuances. Consequently, communities in Awka South face cultural dilution and a weakened sense of identity, as younger generations increasingly favor global languages over their native tongue (Umeh, 2025). This study investigates the multifaceted effects of globalization on indigenous language usage, exploring the socio-cultural and educational implications of this linguistic transformation and examining potential measures to counterbalance these influences.
Statement of the Problem
Globalization in Awka South has led to a significant decline in indigenous language usage, resulting in cultural erosion and weakened identity. The pervasive influence of global languages in education, media, and commerce has marginalized native linguistic practices, limiting intergenerational language transmission. This shift has created a gap in cultural continuity and a loss of traditional knowledge. Despite recognition of the problem, there is insufficient research on how globalization directly impacts indigenous language use and what measures can be implemented to safeguard linguistic heritage (Umeh, 2025).

- To examine the impact of globalization on indigenous language usage in Awka South.

This study is significant as it highlights the adverse effects of globalization on indigenous language usage in Awka South. The findings will inform policymakers and educators about the need for cultural preservation initiatives, ultimately contributing to efforts that safeguard linguistic heritage and promote cultural diversity in the face of global influences (Chukwuemeka, 2023).

This study is limited to exploring the effects of globalization on indigenous language usage in Awka South Local Government Area, focusing on linguistic and cultural dimensions only.
