Background of the Study
Port Harcourt, as a vibrant urban center in Rivers State, attracts a diverse population of migrants from various linguistic backgrounds. These migrants encounter linguistic challenges as they navigate a complex interplay of local dialects, official languages, and global lingua francas (Ndukwe, 2023). Language barriers significantly impact social integration, access to services, and employment opportunities, often leading to social isolation and economic disadvantages (Okoro, 2024). Migrants’ struggles with language not only hinder their ability to communicate effectively but also affect their cultural identity and sense of belonging. The study examines these linguistic challenges in the context of urban migration, considering factors such as education, socio-economic status, and community support networks. It further explores how language proficiency influences the assimilation process and the potential for conflict or misunderstanding in multicultural urban settings (Eze, 2025). By addressing these issues, the research aims to provide insights that can inform policy development and community programs designed to facilitate better integration of migrants in Port Harcourt.
Statement of the Problem
Migrants in Port Harcourt face significant linguistic challenges that hinder their social and economic integration. Language barriers restrict access to essential services, limit employment opportunities, and contribute to social isolation. Despite the multicultural environment of Port Harcourt, there is a lack of comprehensive studies examining the specific linguistic difficulties encountered by migrants. This gap in knowledge affects the development of effective support programs and policies aimed at enhancing integration. The study seeks to identify and analyze these challenges to propose practical solutions for improving communication and integration among migrants (Eze, 2025).
