Background of the study:
Heavy metal contamination poses a serious threat to human physical health, particularly in regions with significant industrial activities. In Okpe, Delta State, the prevalence of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium in the environment has raised concerns regarding their long-term health effects. Exposure to these metals is associated with various adverse health outcomes including neurological disorders, renal dysfunction, and skeletal abnormalities (Eke, 2023). Recent studies have demonstrated that even low-level chronic exposure can accumulate in the body over time, leading to systemic toxicity (Umeh, 2024). The contamination often stems from industrial waste, mining activities, and improper waste management practices. Given the critical nature of these findings, it is imperative to assess the specific health impacts on communities in Okpe. This study will explore the extent of heavy metal contamination and its correlation with physical health indicators among residents, thereby providing crucial data for environmental health policies and remediation strategies (Ogbemudia, 2025).

Statement of the problem:
Heavy metal contamination in Okpe has been linked to various health issues, yet there is insufficient localized research quantifying these effects on residents’ physical health. The lack of specific data hinders effective remediation and public health interventions. This study seeks to quantify heavy metal exposure and examine its direct impact on human physical health within the community.

Objectives of the study:

  • To quantify levels of heavy metal contamination in the study area.
  • To assess the correlation between heavy metal exposure and physical health outcomes.
  • To recommend remediation strategies to reduce exposure risks.

Research questions:

  • What are the levels of heavy metal contamination in Okpe?
  • How does heavy metal exposure affect human physical health?
  • What interventions can reduce heavy metal-induced health risks?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Heavy metal contamination is significantly correlated with adverse physical health outcomes.
  • H₂: Residents in contaminated areas exhibit higher rates of health disorders.
  • H₃: Remediation interventions can significantly improve health outcomes.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it links heavy metal contamination with negative physical health outcomes, providing essential data for developing environmental health policies and remediation efforts in Okpe (Eke, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to assessing the impact of heavy metal contamination on human physical health in Okpe Local Government Area. It does not consider other environmental pollutants.

Definitions of terms:

  • Heavy metal contamination: The presence of toxic metals in the environment due to industrial or natural sources.
  • Physical health: The overall condition of the body in relation to its functioning and well-being.
  • Remediation: The process of reducing or removing environmental contaminants.
