Background of the study:
Urban pollution poses a significant risk to respiratory health, particularly in densely populated areas such as Uyo. Motorcycle riders, who are frequently exposed to high levels of vehicular emissions and particulate matter, represent a vulnerable segment of the population. Recent studies have revealed that chronic exposure to pollutants can lead to reduced lung capacity and impaired respiratory function (Okon, 2023). In Uyo, where motorcycles are a common mode of transportation, the risk of developing respiratory illnesses is amplified by prolonged exposure to urban pollutants. Research conducted in similar urban centers highlights the cumulative effect of environmental toxins on lung health (Ifeanyi, 2024). Furthermore, genetic predispositions and lifestyle factors may compound these effects, creating a complex scenario that necessitates detailed investigation. This study seeks to assess the extent to which urban pollution affects lung capacity in motorcycle riders, thereby providing valuable data for public health interventions and policy reform aimed at reducing exposure risks and improving respiratory health outcomes (Edet, 2025).

Statement of the problem:
Motorcycle riders in Uyo face significant health risks due to constant exposure to urban pollution. Despite mounting evidence of respiratory impairment from environmental toxins, there is a lack of localized data linking pollution levels with reduced lung capacity in this population. This study aims to address the gap by investigating the direct impact of urban pollutants on the lung function of riders, thereby informing targeted health interventions and regulatory policies.

Objectives of the study:

  • To measure lung capacity among urban motorcycle riders.
  • To evaluate the correlation between pollutant exposure and respiratory function.
  • To propose intervention strategies to mitigate health risks from urban pollution.

Research questions:

  • How does urban pollution affect lung capacity in motorcycle riders?
  • What levels of pollutants are most strongly associated with respiratory impairment?
  • Can targeted interventions improve lung function among exposed individuals?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Increased exposure to urban pollutants is significantly associated with reduced lung capacity.
  • H₂: Motorcycle riders in high-pollution areas exhibit poorer respiratory function.
  • H₃: Implementation of pollution control measures improves lung capacity outcomes.

Significance of the study:
The study is significant as it provides evidence linking urban pollution to respiratory health, specifically in motorcycle riders. This information is critical for developing health and safety regulations and for informing urban planning policies in Uyo (Okon, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of urban pollution on lung capacity among motorcycle riders in Uyo Local Government Area. It does not explore other occupational groups or rural settings.

Definitions of terms:

  • Urban pollution: The presence of harmful substances in urban air, primarily from vehicular and industrial sources.
  • Lung capacity: The maximum amount of air the lungs can hold.
  • Respiratory function: The efficiency of the lungs in exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide.
