Background of the Study
Feminist movements have been instrumental in challenging gender inequalities and shaping progressive policy reforms. In Owerri North Local Government Area, the advocacy and activism of feminist groups have significantly influenced gender policy formulation (Okoro, 2023). Recent research conducted between 2023 and 2025 highlights the critical role these movements play in raising awareness, mobilizing communities, and driving legislative changes that promote gender equity (Nwachukwu, 2024). Feminist movements operate at both grassroots and institutional levels, leveraging social media, public demonstrations, and policy dialogues to influence decision-makers. Their efforts have led to increased representation of women in political spaces and the integration of gender perspectives in local governance (Chinwe, 2025). This study aims to examine the contributions of feminist movements to gender policy formulation, exploring how activism translates into concrete policy outcomes and broader societal changes. The study will provide evidence to support further integration of feminist perspectives in policy-making processes, fostering a more equitable society.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident contributions of feminist movements, challenges persist in the integration of gender-sensitive policies in Owerri North (Okoro, 2023). There is a gap between feminist advocacy and its translation into effective policy implementation, limiting the impact of these movements on gender equality (Nwachukwu, 2024). The resistance from traditional power structures and institutional inertia further hinders progress (Chinwe, 2025). This study seeks to analyze the role of feminist movements in gender policy formulation and identify the barriers preventing their full impact on public policy.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the influence of feminist movements on gender policy formulation in Owerri North.
To identify challenges hindering the translation of feminist advocacy into policy.
To recommend strategies for enhancing the impact of feminist movements on gender policy.
Research Questions:
What role do feminist movements play in shaping gender policy in Owerri North?
What challenges impede the effective translation of feminist advocacy into policy?
How can the impact of feminist movements on policy formulation be enhanced?
Research Hypotheses:
Feminist movements significantly influence gender policy formulation.
Institutional barriers limit the effectiveness of feminist advocacy.
Enhanced engagement between feminist groups and policymakers improves gender policy outcomes.
