Background of the study
Work stress is increasingly recognized as a major factor affecting mental health in high-demand work environments, especially in healthcare settings. In Benin City, hospital workers are subject to significant work-related stress due to long shifts, high patient loads, and emotionally challenging situations. These stressors have a profound impact on mental health, leading to burnout, anxiety, and decreased overall job performance (Egbunike, 2023). The healthcare industry is particularly vulnerable, as the consequences of work stress extend beyond individual well-being to affect the quality of patient care. Additionally, inadequate support systems and limited access to mental health resources exacerbate the situation (Okon, 2024). Recent studies underscore the urgent need to address work stress as a public health concern. This study evaluates the effects of work stress on the mental health of hospital workers, examining factors that contribute to stress and identifying coping mechanisms and institutional supports that can alleviate its negative impacts. By integrating contemporary research findings and practical insights, the study aims to contribute to improved workplace mental health strategies in healthcare settings (Akinyele, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Hospital workers in Benin City experience high levels of work stress, which significantly impact their mental health and job performance. The demanding nature of healthcare, combined with long working hours and emotional strain, contributes to burnout and anxiety. These issues not only diminish employee well-being but also compromise patient care quality. This study aims to identify the specific sources of work stress among hospital workers and evaluate their effects on mental health. Addressing these challenges is critical to developing effective mental health support systems and ensuring a sustainable workforce in healthcare (Nwosu, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the levels of work stress among hospital workers.
  2. To evaluate the impact of work stress on mental health.
  3. To recommend strategies to mitigate work stress and improve mental well-being.

Research questions:

  1. What are the primary sources of work stress for hospital workers?
  2. How does work stress affect the mental health of hospital employees?
  3. What interventions can reduce work stress and improve mental health outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. High work stress is significantly associated with poor mental health among hospital workers.
  2. Inadequate support systems exacerbate the effects of work stress.
  3. Effective stress management programs improve mental health outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of work stress on the mental health of hospital workers, a critical issue in healthcare. Its findings will guide hospital administrations in developing support systems and stress management interventions to enhance employee well-being and patient care quality. The research contributes to the broader discourse on workplace mental health (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Work stress: The physical and psychological response to job demands.
  2. Mental health: The state of psychological well-being.
  3. Hospital workers: Employees involved in healthcare service delivery.
