Background of the study
Social networks play a pivotal role in shaping job opportunities, particularly for unemployed youths who rely on interpersonal connections to access employment information. In Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, social networks—both online and offline—have become critical channels through which job opportunities are communicated and secured (Nnamani, 2023). These networks often serve as alternative platforms for overcoming formal employment barriers, offering avenues for mentorship, referrals, and informal recruitment processes. However, the reliance on social networks may also reinforce existing inequalities, as access and quality of connections vary across different socio-economic groups (Okoro, 2024). Furthermore, the digital divide and limited technological literacy can hinder the effective use of online social networks, affecting the employment prospects of many youths. This study examines the extent to which social networks influence job opportunities among unemployed youths in Abakaliki, assessing both the benefits and limitations of these informal channels. It aims to shed light on how social capital can be harnessed to improve employment outcomes and identify strategies to bridge existing gaps (Amadi, 2025). By integrating current literature and empirical data, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of the role social networks play in shaping job prospects for young job seekers.

Statement of the problem
Unemployed youths in Abakaliki face challenges in accessing formal job opportunities, often turning to social networks for employment leads. However, the effectiveness of these networks is inconsistent, with disparities in social capital and digital access contributing to unequal employment outcomes. This study seeks to identify the strengths and limitations of relying on social networks for job opportunities and to propose measures that can enhance the equitable distribution of employment resources. Addressing these issues is critical for improving youth employment prospects (Ibekwe, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the role of social networks in providing job opportunities.
  2. To evaluate the impact of social capital on employment outcomes.
  3. To recommend strategies to enhance effective use of social networks for job acquisition.

Research questions:

  1. How do unemployed youths in Abakaliki utilize social networks to find jobs?
  2. What impact does social capital have on employment outcomes?
  3. What measures can improve access to job opportunities through social networks?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. A strong social network positively influences job opportunities.
  2. Limited access to digital networks correlates with lower employment success.
  3. Enhancing social capital will improve job acquisition among youths.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the critical role of social networks in shaping job opportunities for unemployed youths in Abakaliki. Its findings will inform policy and program development aimed at bridging digital and social gaps, thereby promoting more equitable access to employment. The research contributes to discussions on social capital and youth employment (Eke, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Social networks: Platforms and relationships used for communication and information sharing.
  2. Job opportunities: Employment prospects available to individuals.
  3. Social capital: The resources available through social relationships and networks.
