Background of the study
Industrial strikes, particularly in the education sector, have far-reaching implications for economic growth and social stability. In Akure North, tertiary institutions have experienced periodic strikes that disrupt academic schedules, research activities, and administrative functions. Such disruptions not only affect the academic calendar but also lead to a loss of productivity, financial losses, and reduced investor confidence (Folarin, 2023). The ripple effects of strikes extend beyond the institutions, impacting local economies and community development. While strikes are often a tool for demanding better working conditions, their prolonged occurrence can stall economic progress and weaken institutional reputations (Akin, 2024). The intricate balance between labor rights and institutional performance necessitates a deeper understanding of the strike phenomenon. This study investigates how industrial strikes in tertiary institutions affect economic growth in the region, exploring both immediate and long-term impacts. It examines stakeholders’ perspectives and assesses strategies aimed at minimizing disruptions while addressing underlying grievances (Olu, 2025). By synthesizing empirical data and theoretical frameworks, the study provides a comprehensive analysis of how strike actions impede economic development and outlines potential remedial measures.

Statement of the problem
Tertiary institutions in Akure North have been adversely affected by recurrent industrial strikes, which have led to significant economic disruptions. The strikes interrupt academic progress, reduce institutional revenue, and diminish the overall contribution of education to economic growth. These challenges raise concerns regarding the long-term economic impact on the local community and the sustainability of academic institutions. This study seeks to understand the mechanisms through which strikes affect economic growth and to propose strategies to mitigate their adverse effects. Addressing these issues is crucial for maintaining economic stability and educational continuity (Adewuyi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the frequency and nature of industrial strikes in tertiary institutions.
  2. To evaluate the impact of strikes on economic growth in Akure North.
  3. To propose strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of strikes.

Research questions:

  1. What are the primary causes of industrial strikes in tertiary institutions?
  2. How do strikes affect the economic growth of the local community?
  3. What measures can reduce the frequency and impact of these strikes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Frequent industrial strikes negatively affect local economic growth.
  2. Strikes significantly disrupt academic and administrative functions.
  3. Implementing conflict resolution strategies can reduce strike-induced disruptions.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it illuminates the economic implications of industrial strikes in tertiary institutions. Its findings will inform policymakers and educational administrators on strategies to balance labor rights with economic development. The research offers practical insights into mitigating strike impacts, thereby contributing to sustained academic and economic growth in Akure North (Balogun, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Industrial strikes: Organized work stoppages to express grievances.
  2. Economic growth: An increase in the production of goods and services.
  3. Tertiary institutions: Higher education establishments, such as universities and colleges.
