Background of the Study

Access to land ownership is a critical indicator of economic empowerment and social status. In Asaba Local Government Area, gender disparity in land ownership remains a significant issue, with women often facing legal, cultural, and institutional barriers (Oghene, 2023). Recent studies between 2023 and 2025 reveal that traditional inheritance practices, discriminatory laws, and socio-cultural norms contribute to the unequal distribution of land resources, disadvantaging women (Uche, 2024). This disparity not only limits women's economic opportunities but also reinforces broader patterns of gender inequality in the community (Amadi, 2025). The study seeks to appraise the extent of gender disparity in land ownership, exploring the underlying factors and implications for women’s socio-economic status. A thorough analysis of both legal and societal dimensions is expected to inform reforms that can bridge the gender gap in land ownership.

Statement of the Problem

Despite legal frameworks intended to promote equality, gender disparity in land ownership persists in Asaba, with women facing systemic barriers and cultural biases (Oghene, 2023). Traditional practices and discriminatory policies continue to limit women's access to land, undermining their economic empowerment (Uche, 2024). This inequity contributes to broader socio-economic challenges and perpetuates gender inequality in the region (Amadi, 2025). This study aims to investigate the factors contributing to this disparity and to propose strategies for creating a more equitable land ownership environment.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the extent of gender disparity in land ownership in Asaba.

To identify legal, cultural, and institutional factors contributing to this disparity.

To recommend strategies for promoting equitable land distribution.

Research Questions:

What is the extent of gender disparity in access to land ownership in Asaba?

Which factors contribute to the unequal distribution of land?

What policy reforms can promote equitable land ownership?

Research Hypotheses:

Gender significantly influences access to land ownership.

Cultural practices negatively impact women's land ownership opportunities.

Policy reforms can reduce gender disparity in land distribution.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it addresses gender disparity in land ownership, a key factor in economic empowerment. The findings will inform legal and policy reforms, helping to create a more equitable environment in Asaba. By highlighting the systemic barriers faced by women, the study aims to promote gender equality and improve socio-economic outcomes in the community.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Land Ownership: The legal right to possess and use land.

Gender Disparity: Unequal treatment or access based on gender.

Economic Empowerment: The capacity to participate in economic activities and benefit from resources.
