Background of the study:
The cultural perceptions of gender roles in Ijebu East Local Government Area have long been a subject of both traditional discourse and contemporary analysis. Deep-rooted cultural norms and values have historically defined the roles and responsibilities of men and women, shaping social expectations and family structures (Oluwole, 2023). However, evolving socio-economic conditions and increasing exposure to global ideologies have introduced competing perspectives regarding gender roles (Adebayo, 2024). This study investigates how traditional gender perceptions persist or transform amidst modern influences. It examines the interplay between customary beliefs, educational attainments, and economic participation, noting that the evolution of gender roles is both gradual and contested (Ibrahim, 2025). In Ijebu East, longstanding practices coexist with emerging feminist ideas, thereby creating a dynamic cultural discourse. By critically analyzing these perceptions, the research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the cultural foundations of gender roles and their implications on social behavior and policy formulation. This exploration is pertinent for community leaders seeking to balance cultural heritage with progressive social change (Adekunle, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Traditional cultural perceptions in Ijebu East have imposed rigid gender roles that may limit social and economic opportunities, particularly for women. The conflict between established customs and modern egalitarian views has led to social tensions and ambiguities in role expectations. There is a dearth of systematic research exploring these tensions, necessitating an investigation into how evolving perceptions impact gender relations and opportunities. The study aims to elucidate the causes and consequences of these persistent gender stereotypes while proposing culturally sensitive strategies for change (Balogun, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine traditional cultural perceptions of gender roles in Ijebu East.
  2. To assess the influence of modern ideologies on these traditional roles.
  3. To recommend culturally relevant strategies for promoting gender equity.

Research questions:

  1. What are the prevailing cultural perceptions of gender roles in Ijebu East?
  2. How have modern influences reshaped these traditional perceptions?
  3. What strategies can mitigate gender role stereotyping in the community?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional perceptions significantly shape gender roles in Ijebu East.
  2. Modern influences are beginning to alter established gender role norms.
  3. Culturally tailored interventions can promote gender equity in the community.

Significance of the study:
This study provides a critical insight into the cultural dynamics shaping gender roles, offering policy recommendations to balance tradition and modernity. It is significant for community stakeholders, educators, and policymakers working towards a more equitable social framework (Oladele, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to exploring the cultural perceptions of gender roles in Ijebu East Local Government Area, focusing on traditional norms and their evolution under modern influences. It does not cover economic or political dimensions beyond cultural implications.

Definitions of terms:

  • Gender Roles: Socially constructed roles and behaviors expected of individuals based on their gender.
  • Cultural Perceptions: Collective views and interpretations influenced by traditions and customs.
  • Modern Ideologies: Contemporary beliefs and values that challenge traditional norms.
