Background of the Study
School feeding programs have been implemented as a strategic intervention to enhance students’ concentration and overall academic performance in various regions, including Abakaliki Local Government Area. Adequate nutrition is essential for cognitive development, and these programs aim to address malnutrition and food insecurity among students (Ibrahim, 2023). In Ebonyi State, where economic challenges and limited access to nutritious meals are prevalent, school feeding initiatives provide a vital support system for learners. Recent studies have demonstrated that regular, balanced meals contribute significantly to improved attention spans, memory retention, and classroom behavior (Nwachukwu, 2024). Moreover, feeding programs alleviate the burden on families, enabling children to focus more effectively on their studies. This assessment seeks to explore the relationship between school feeding and students’ concentration levels, examining how nutritional support influences learning outcomes. By analyzing participation rates, meal quality, and academic indicators, the study aims to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of these programs. The research findings are expected to inform policy decisions and promote the expansion of school feeding initiatives, ultimately contributing to enhanced educational performance and overall well-being in the community (Okoro, 2025). Additionally, the study will also assess parental feedback and student satisfaction to provide insights for balancing modern interventions with improved outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
In Abakaliki, inadequate nutrition due to insufficient school feeding programs negatively affects students’ concentration and academic performance. Despite the recognized benefits of proper nutrition, many students do not receive balanced meals, resulting in diminished cognitive function and classroom engagement (Ibrahim, 2023). Limited funding and logistical challenges contribute to inconsistent program delivery (Nwachukwu, 2024). The problem is further compounded by a lack of systematic evaluation of feeding programs' impact on student concentration (Okoro, 2025). This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the relationship between school feeding and concentration, aiming to provide actionable recommendations for improvement. Effective strategies must be identified to enhance garden utilization promptly, sustainably.
