Background of the Study
Inter-ethnic marriages have become increasingly common in diverse societies; however, cultural barriers continue to impede such unions in various regions. In Uyo, deeply rooted cultural traditions and ethnic loyalties create significant challenges for couples from different ethnic backgrounds (Ikpe, 2023). Social norms, familial expectations, and longstanding prejudices often lead to social resistance and conflicts when individuals pursue inter-ethnic relationships. These cultural barriers not only affect the personal lives of the couples but also have broader implications for social integration and national unity (Bassey, 2024). Recent research underscores that overcoming these barriers requires addressing historical biases and promoting intercultural dialogue (Okon, 2025). This study explores the cultural challenges that hinder inter-ethnic marriages in Uyo, aiming to provide recommendations that foster social cohesion and inclusivity.
Statement of the Problem
In Uyo, cultural barriers significantly hinder the formation and acceptance of inter-ethnic marriages. Deep-seated prejudices, traditional norms, and family pressures discourage individuals from pursuing relationships outside their ethnic group (Ikpe, 2023). This resistance not only affects the couples but also perpetuates social divisions (Bassey, 2024). Despite increasing multicultural interactions, there is limited empirical research on the specific cultural obstacles facing inter-ethnic unions in the region. This study seeks to identify these barriers and propose strategies to promote inter-ethnic harmony and acceptance (Okon, 2025).
