Background of the Study
Cultural globalization has reshaped societies by facilitating the exchange of ideas, lifestyles, and cultural values across borders. In Ikeja Local Government Area, Lagos State, young people are at the forefront of this cultural transformation. Exposure to global media, digital technologies, and international trends influences youth identity formation, often challenging traditional cultural norms (Olawale, 2023). As youths increasingly embrace global cultural symbols and practices, conflicts may arise between inherited cultural values and modern global influences (Eze, 2024). This phenomenon can lead to shifts in behavior, lifestyle choices, and self-perception. Studies indicate that while globalization can broaden horizons and foster cosmopolitan attitudes, it may also result in cultural dissonance and identity crises among the youth (Adeyemi, 2025). This research explores how cultural globalization impacts youth identity in Ikeja, examining both the opportunities and challenges it presents. By understanding these dynamics, the study aims to offer insights for policymakers, educators, and community leaders to promote a balanced cultural identity among youths.
Statement of the Problem
In Ikeja, cultural globalization has significantly influenced youth identity, leading to conflicts between traditional values and modern global trends. Young people face challenges in reconciling their cultural heritage with rapidly changing lifestyles (Olawale, 2023). The resulting identity crisis may affect social cohesion and personal development (Eze, 2024). Despite these challenges, there is limited research on how globalization shapes youth identity in this context. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the impact of cultural globalization on the identity formation of youths, thereby providing insights for effective cultural integration strategies (Adeyemi, 2025).
