Background of the Study
Participation in sports is often associated with a host of positive developmental outcomes, ranging from physical fitness to enhanced cognitive skills. In Warri South Local Government Area, engagement in sports activities among students is posited to contribute not only to improved health but also to academic success (Ibrahim, 2023). Physical exercise is known to stimulate brain function, reduce stress, and foster teamwork, all of which can have a beneficial impact on learning and academic performance (Okoro, 2024). Furthermore, sports participation encourages discipline, time management, and resilience, skills that are transferable to the classroom environment. Several studies have established a positive correlation between regular physical activity and academic performance (Adetayo, 2025). This study aims to assess the relationship between students’ involvement in sports and their academic achievement, exploring how extracurricular physical activities influence cognitive development and educational outcomes. The research will utilize both quantitative and qualitative approaches to determine the strength of this relationship and provide recommendations for integrating sports into school programs.
Statement of the Problem
In Warri South, while sports participation is widely encouraged, its direct relationship with academic achievement remains underexplored. There is a lack of systematic evidence linking extracurricular sports activities with measurable improvements in academic performance (Ibrahim, 2023). This gap poses a challenge for educational policymakers and school administrators in designing balanced curricula that promote both physical and academic excellence. The absence of clear data on the benefits of sports on academic outcomes hampers the formulation of strategies that could harness the positive impact of physical activities on learning (Okoro, 2024). Addressing this issue is crucial for optimizing student development (Adetayo, 2025).
