Background of the Study
Gender-based violence poses a serious threat to the educational advancement of the girl-child, particularly in regions like Ika South Local Government Area. The pervasive nature of violence, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, creates an environment of fear and instability that adversely affects academic performance and school attendance (Ighodaro, 2023). Recent studies conducted between 2023 and 2025 reveal that gender-based violence not only disrupts learning but also diminishes self-esteem and long-term educational aspirations (Opara, 2024). Societal norms and systemic inadequacies further exacerbate the challenges faced by girls, making them more vulnerable to abuse and limiting their opportunities for growth (Ibe, 2025). This study seeks to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of gender-based violence on girl-child education, analyzing how violence disrupts the learning process and impacts future prospects. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of violence on education and promote a safer, more inclusive learning environment.
Statement of the Problem
Despite policy initiatives to promote girl-child education, gender-based violence continues to impede educational access and achievement in Ika South (Ighodaro, 2023). Incidents of violence disrupt academic progress, reduce school attendance, and negatively affect psychological well-being (Opara, 2024). The existing educational environment remains unsafe for girls, with inadequate measures in place to protect them from abuse (Ibe, 2025). This persistent challenge undermines efforts to achieve gender equality in education and necessitates a focused investigation into the impact of gender-based violence on educational outcomes and potential interventions to enhance safety.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the prevalence of gender-based violence affecting girl-child education in Ika South.
To evaluate the impact of violence on academic performance and school attendance.
To propose interventions that can create a safer educational environment for girls.
Research Questions:
What is the prevalence of gender-based violence affecting girl-child education in Ika South?
How does gender-based violence impact academic performance and attendance?
What strategies can effectively mitigate the effects of violence on education?
Research Hypotheses:
Gender-based violence significantly disrupts the educational progress of girls.
Experiences of violence negatively affect girls' academic performance.
Implementing protective measures can improve educational outcomes for affected girls.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the detrimental effects of gender-based violence on girl-child education. The findings will guide policymakers, educators, and community leaders in developing targeted interventions to create a safer and more supportive learning environment. Enhanced understanding of these issues is expected to contribute to improved educational policies and gender equality in the community.
