Background of the Study

Gendered expectations play a significant role in shaping the aspirations of young girls, particularly in urban settings like Ikorodu Local Government Area. Traditional cultural norms and societal stereotypes often limit opportunities and create barriers to academic and career ambitions for females (Balogun, 2023). Recent research conducted between 2023 and 2025 highlights that societal expectations, influenced by gendered roles, can hinder the development of self-confidence and restrict exposure to diverse career paths (Adekunle, 2024). In addition, these expectations often dictate behaviors and interests, leading to early specialization in traditionally “feminine” roles and discouraging participation in STEM and leadership positions (Fadeyi, 2025). The interplay between cultural traditions and modern influences further complicates the pursuit of higher aspirations among young girls. This study aims to explore how gendered expectations affect the personal and educational aspirations of young girls in Ikorodu, investigating both family and community influences. A critical review of existing literature supports the need for intervention programs that encourage gender equality and self-empowerment among young girls.

Statement of the Problem

Despite growing awareness of gender equality, young girls in Ikorodu still face restrictive gendered expectations that limit their aspirations and potential (Balogun, 2023). Societal norms and cultural traditions continue to dictate roles and career choices, often discouraging girls from pursuing ambitious academic and professional paths (Adekunle, 2024). This persistent issue undermines personal development and economic growth by restricting talent and innovation (Fadeyi, 2025). There is an urgent need to investigate how these expectations influence girls' aspirations and to identify strategies that could help dismantle these barriers, enabling girls to realize their full potential.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the influence of gendered expectations on young girls' aspirations in Ikorodu.

To evaluate the role of family and community in shaping these expectations.

To propose strategies for empowering young girls to pursue diverse career paths.

Research Questions:

What gendered expectations impact young girls' aspirations in Ikorodu?

How do family and community roles contribute to these expectations?

What measures can empower girls to overcome restrictive gender norms?

Research Hypotheses:

There is a significant negative impact of gendered expectations on girls' aspirations.

Family influences play a crucial role in reinforcing gendered expectations.

Empowerment programs are effective in broadening girls' career ambitions.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it sheds light on the restrictive impact of gendered expectations on young girls' aspirations in Ikorodu. It provides evidence-based recommendations to foster an environment that supports gender equality and empowerment. The findings will benefit educators, policymakers, and community leaders in creating initiatives that enable girls to achieve their full potential.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Gendered Expectations: Societal norms and stereotypes that prescribe specific roles based on gender.

Aspirations: Ambitions or goals regarding future achievements.

Empowerment: The process of gaining confidence, skills, and opportunities to overcome barriers.
