Background of the Study

Students’ health status is increasingly recognized as a critical factor influencing academic performance. In Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State, the interplay between physical health, nutrition, and psychological well-being has significant implications for educational outcomes (Ade, 2023). Poor health can lead to absenteeism, reduced concentration, and lower cognitive function, all of which adversely affect academic achievement (Ibrahim, 2024). Conversely, a healthy student population is more likely to perform better academically, benefiting from improved energy levels and enhanced mental focus. This study examines the relationship between health status and academic performance, considering factors such as nutritional deficiencies, chronic illnesses, and mental health issues. By integrating data from health assessments and academic records, the research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of how health directly and indirectly influences learning outcomes. The findings are expected to guide interventions that promote student health, thereby fostering improved academic performance (Okoro, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the known correlation between health and academic performance, many students in Ikorodu experience health challenges that hinder their educational success (Ade, 2023). Poor nutrition, chronic illnesses, and mental health issues contribute to frequent absenteeism and lower academic achievement (Ibrahim, 2024). The lack of integrated health and educational interventions exacerbates these challenges, resulting in a cycle of poor health and suboptimal learning outcomes. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between students’ health status and academic performance, aiming to identify key areas for intervention to improve both health and educational achievements (Okoro, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the health status of students in Ikorodu.

2. To examine the correlation between health indicators and academic performance.

3. To recommend interventions to improve student health and academic outcomes.

Research Questions:

1. What is the current health status of students in Ikorodu?

2. How does health status affect academic performance?

3. What measures can enhance student health and improve learning outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Poor health status is negatively associated with academic performance.

2. Nutritional deficiencies contribute significantly to lower academic outcomes.

3. Health interventions will lead to improved academic achievement.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it elucidates the critical link between student health and academic performance in Ikorodu. The findings will provide evidence for developing integrated health and educational programs, ultimately enhancing both student well-being and academic success. This research informs policy reforms and targeted interventions (Ade, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

The study is limited to examining the relationship between students’ health status and academic performance in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State. It does not include broader health or socio-economic variables.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Health status: The overall physical and mental condition of an individual.

2. Academic performance: The measurable outcomes of students' educational achievements.

3. Nutritional deficiencies: Inadequate intake of essential nutrients affecting health and cognition.
