Background of the Study
Extracurricular activities, ranging from sports to cultural clubs, have long been recognized as vital components of a holistic educational experience. In Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, these activities play a significant role in enhancing students’ academic development by fostering teamwork, leadership skills, and time management (Olu, 2023). Participation in extracurricular programs often correlates with improved social skills and a higher level of academic engagement, as students learn to balance academic responsibilities with creative pursuits (Ibrahim, 2024). However, challenges such as limited resources, insufficient institutional support, and scheduling conflicts may hinder the effectiveness of these activities. This study evaluates the contribution of extracurricular activities to academic development by examining their impact on student performance and overall educational experience. It further investigates the interplay between academic achievement and participation in non-academic pursuits, aiming to provide insights that can inform educational policy and school programming (Adebola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of extracurricular activities, many students in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area face challenges in balancing these activities with academic responsibilities (Olu, 2023). Limited resources and inadequate institutional support have resulted in underutilized extracurricular programs, potentially impacting students’ academic development (Ibrahim, 2024). The lack of systematic evaluation of these programs further complicates efforts to optimize their contribution to education. This study seeks to investigate the extent to which extracurricular activities influence academic performance, addressing the gap in current literature and identifying areas for program improvement (Adebola, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the extent of participation in extracurricular activities.
2. To assess the impact of these activities on academic development.
3. To recommend strategies for integrating extracurricular programs with academic goals.
Research Questions:
1. What is the level of student participation in extracurricular activities?
2. How do extracurricular activities affect academic performance?
3. What improvements can be made to maximize their benefits?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Participation in extracurricular activities positively influences academic development.
2. Students engaged in extracurricular activities exhibit better time management skills.
3. Institutional support enhances the effectiveness of extracurricular programs.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the vital role of extracurricular activities in fostering academic development in Ikpoba-Okha. The findings will guide educators and policymakers in creating balanced programs that enhance both academic and personal growth. This research contributes to a holistic understanding of education (Olu, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the role of extracurricular activities in students’ academic development in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State. It does not consider academic or non-academic factors outside this context.
Definitions of Terms:
