Background of the Study
Traditional rulers have historically played a significant role in the socio-cultural and economic development of communities. In Ikere Local Government Area, Ekiti State, traditional institutions continue to influence economic activities through mediation, conflict resolution, and the promotion of cultural heritage that attracts tourism and local investments (Olatunji, 2023). Their leadership contributes to maintaining social order, facilitating community mobilization, and bridging the gap between modern governance and traditional practices (Adebayo, 2024). The involvement of traditional rulers in economic development is increasingly recognized as a catalyst for community empowerment and sustainable growth. This study examines the multifaceted role of traditional rulers in Ikere, exploring how their interventions foster economic development, support local businesses, and promote social cohesion. By analyzing historical precedents, current practices, and stakeholder perspectives, the research highlights the potential of traditional leadership in driving inclusive economic progress (Adekunle, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the influential role of traditional rulers in Ikere, their potential contributions to economic development remain underexplored. Modern governance structures often overlook the impact of traditional leadership, leading to missed opportunities for leveraging cultural capital and community networks (Babatunde, 2023). This study seeks to investigate the challenges and opportunities associated with the involvement of traditional rulers in economic development, identifying gaps in policy and practice that hinder their effective participation in driving local economic growth.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the role of traditional rulers in promoting economic development in Ikere.
To assess the impact of traditional leadership on local business and community cohesion.
