Background of the study
Alcohol consumption is a significant public health concern that has been closely linked to the development of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as liver disease, cardiovascular complications, and certain cancers. In Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State, cultural practices and social norms often contribute to high levels of alcohol intake, thereby elevating the risk of NCDs among residents (Okoro, 2023). Recent research underscores that excessive alcohol consumption not only increases the burden of chronic illnesses but also strains local healthcare systems due to increased hospitalization and treatment costs (Chukwu, 2024). The study explores how alcohol consumption patterns correlate with the prevalence of NCDs and assesses the extent to which lifestyle modifications and public health interventions can mitigate these effects (Amadi, 2025). Understanding the link between alcohol use and chronic disease is critical for designing targeted health education programs and policy interventions aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm in the community.
Statement of the problem
In Onitsha North, high levels of alcohol consumption have been implicated in the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases. The situation is exacerbated by limited public awareness, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and insufficient healthcare resources to manage chronic conditions. The adverse health outcomes associated with excessive alcohol use pose a serious challenge to community well-being and the efficiency of local health services. Addressing this issue requires a thorough investigation of the relationship between alcohol consumption and NCDs (Okoro, 2023; Amadi, 2025).
