Background of the study
Maternal literacy plays a crucial role in shaping child health outcomes, particularly in the context of immunization practices. In Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, research has demonstrated a strong correlation between a mother’s educational level and her child’s likelihood of receiving timely vaccinations (Babatunde, 2023). Literate mothers are generally better informed about the benefits of immunization and the potential risks of vaccine-preventable diseases. However, challenges persist due to varying literacy levels, misinformation, and socio-economic barriers. Public health initiatives have increasingly focused on improving maternal education as a strategy to enhance immunization coverage (Olufemi, 2024). Additionally, community outreach programs have been instrumental in addressing misconceptions about vaccines (Afolabi, 2025). This study examines how maternal literacy impacts immunization rates, exploring underlying factors such as access to education and health information dissemination. The interplay between educational attainment and healthcare-seeking behavior remains a critical area for intervention in the region.
Statement of the problem
In Akure South, low maternal literacy is linked with suboptimal immunization rates, exposing children to preventable diseases. Despite ongoing public health campaigns, a significant gap remains between recommended vaccination schedules and actual immunization coverage. Factors such as misinformation and economic constraints further complicate the situation. This issue underscores the urgent need to understand the influence of maternal literacy on health behaviors and to develop strategies that address educational barriers in child healthcare (Babatunde, 2023; Olufemi, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To investigate the relationship between maternal literacy and child immunization rates.
To identify socio-economic and informational barriers to immunization.
To recommend strategies to improve maternal education and immunization coverage.
Research questions:
How does maternal literacy affect child immunization practices in Akure South?
What socio-economic factors influence the immunization rates among children?
What interventions can effectively enhance maternal understanding of immunization benefits?
Research Hypotheses:
Higher maternal literacy is associated with increased child immunization rates.
Socio-economic constraints negatively affect child immunization coverage.
Educational interventions improve maternal knowledge and vaccination compliance.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it links maternal literacy with child health outcomes, particularly immunization rates. Findings will assist healthcare policymakers and educational institutions in designing targeted interventions to improve health literacy and vaccination coverage in Akure South (Babatunde, 2023; Afolabi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to exploring the effect of maternal literacy on child immunization rates in Akure South Local Government Area, considering local socio-economic conditions and education levels.
Definitions of terms:
Maternal Literacy: The ability of mothers to read, write, and understand health information.
Immunization Rates: The percentage of children receiving recommended vaccines.
Socio-economic Barriers: Economic and social factors that impede access to health services.
