Background of the study
Healthcare services for people living with disabilities require specialized attention to ensure equitable access and quality care. In Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, the current healthcare infrastructure often falls short in addressing the unique needs of disabled individuals. Recent policy reforms and advocacy initiatives have underscored the importance of inclusive healthcare systems that cater to this vulnerable population (Johnson, 2023). Health facilities are increasingly being evaluated for their ability to provide accessible, affordable, and respectful care, yet many gaps persist. Research indicates that inadequate training, limited resources, and infrastructural challenges contribute to suboptimal service delivery (Okafor, 2024). Moreover, community perceptions and stigmatization further hinder access to necessary services (Ikechukwu, 2025). This study explores how healthcare services are currently structured for people living with disabilities, identifying key barriers and opportunities for improvement through policy reform and community engagement.

Statement of the problem
Despite progressive policies, people living with disabilities in Awka South continue to experience significant barriers to accessing quality healthcare. These barriers include physical inaccessibility, limited provider knowledge, and societal stigma. Inadequate healthcare services lead to poorer health outcomes and a diminished quality of life for this group. The gap between policy intentions and actual service delivery remains a critical issue that demands urgent investigation to improve healthcare equity (Johnson, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the accessibility and quality of healthcare services for people with disabilities.

  2. To identify key challenges faced by healthcare providers and recipients.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing inclusivity in healthcare.

Research questions:

  1. How accessible are healthcare services for people living with disabilities in Awka South?

  2. What are the major challenges encountered by healthcare providers in delivering services?

  3. How can existing services be improved to meet the needs of people with disabilities?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is a significant relationship between provider training and the quality of disability healthcare services.

  2. Infrastructural challenges adversely affect the accessibility of healthcare services.

  3. Policy reforms can lead to measurable improvements in service delivery for disabled individuals.

Significance of the study
This study highlights critical gaps in healthcare services for people with disabilities, providing evidence-based recommendations to bridge these gaps. It is intended to benefit policymakers, healthcare providers, and advocacy groups by offering insights into service accessibility and quality improvements (Johnson, 2023; Ikechukwu, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study focuses exclusively on evaluating healthcare services for people living with disabilities in Awka South Local Government Area, considering only local infrastructure, policies, and community attitudes.

Definitions of terms:

  • Disability: A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits major life activities.

  • Healthcare Services: Medical and supportive services provided to individuals.

  • Accessibility: The ease with which individuals can obtain necessary services.
