Background of the Study
This study explores the pervasive influence of gender norms on boys’ emotional expression within Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Edo State. Traditional expectations often dictate that boys should exhibit stoicism, limiting their emotional vocabulary and capacity to express feelings freely (Smith, 2023). In recent years, researchers have noted that strict gender expectations not only impede emotional development but also contribute to long-term mental health challenges (Brown, 2024). The community’s adherence to cultural traditions reinforces these norms, resulting in boys facing social sanctions for displaying vulnerability (Johnson, 2025). Literature indicates that societal pressures and institutional frameworks—such as school environments and family structures—further cement these restrictive behaviors. Contemporary studies suggest that open emotional expression is linked to better psychological resilience and overall well-being (Ade, 2023). Therefore, investigating these dynamics locally can illuminate potential avenues for educational and social interventions. The research aims to integrate sociocultural analysis with psychological theories to understand the depth of these influences. Such integration is crucial given the evolving discussions on masculinity and mental health, and it calls for interdisciplinary approaches to redefine what it means for boys to be emotionally expressive in a culturally sensitive manner (Smith, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite growing global discourse on the importance of emotional literacy, boys in Orhionmwon face rigid gender norms that restrict their emotional expression. These constraints lead to internal conflicts and potential mental health issues, yet local data remains scant. This study addresses the gap by investigating the specific cultural and social mechanisms that perpetuate these norms. The challenge lies in reconciling traditional expectations with contemporary needs for psychological well-being. Without targeted intervention, the continued suppression of emotions may further exacerbate social and individual mental health challenges (Brown, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To identify cultural practices that enforce emotional restraint among boys.

  • To examine the impact of these norms on boys’ psychological health.

  • To propose community-based strategies for promoting healthy emotional expression.

Research Questions:

  • What cultural factors enforce emotional restraint among boys?

  • How do these gender norms affect boys’ psychological well-being?

  • What interventions can facilitate a healthier expression of emotions?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Boys subjected to strict gender norms display lower emotional literacy.

  • H₂: There is a significant association between emotional suppression and increased mental health issues.

  • H₃: Community-based interventions can improve boys’ emotional expression.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insight into how entrenched gender norms affect boys’ emotional development, informing local educators and policymakers. Its findings will support the design of culturally sensitive mental health interventions, contributing to improved psychological outcomes and community well-being (Johnson, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses solely on boys in Orhionmwon Local Government Area and examines cultural and social influences on their emotional expression. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and the challenge of isolating cultural variables from other influencing factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Gender Norms: Socially constructed roles and behaviors prescribed to individuals based on their gender (Brown, 2024).

  • Emotional Expression: The manner in which individuals communicate their feelings verbally or nonverbally.

  • Cultural Practices: Established traditions and behaviors that influence societal expectations.
