Background of the study
Environmental pollution has far-reaching economic implications, affecting public health, productivity, and overall quality of life. In Aba North, industrial activities and urbanization have resulted in significant environmental degradation. Recent studies (Okeke, 2023; Ebele, 2024) have linked pollution to increased healthcare costs, reduced workforce productivity, and diminished property values. This study investigates the economic costs associated with environmental pollution in Aba North by analyzing direct and indirect financial burdens on households and businesses. It examines the impact of air and water pollution on local industries and explores how environmental degradation hinders sustainable economic development. The research integrates economic analysis with environmental studies to highlight the complex relationship between pollution and economic growth. By providing quantitative data and policy evaluations, the study aims to propose interventions that balance economic development with environmental protection (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Aba North is experiencing severe economic challenges due to high levels of environmental pollution. The costs associated with healthcare, loss of productivity, and property devaluation are substantial. Despite efforts to regulate industrial emissions and manage waste, pollution persists and undermines the local economy. This study seeks to quantify the economic impacts of environmental pollution and identify policy measures that can alleviate these negative consequences, ensuring a healthier and more prosperous community (Ebele, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To quantify the economic costs of environmental pollution.
To analyze the impact on public health and productivity.
To propose policy measures for pollution reduction.
Research questions:
What are the economic costs associated with environmental pollution?
How does pollution affect local economic activities?
What policy measures can reduce these economic impacts?
Research Hypotheses:
Environmental pollution significantly increases economic costs.
Pollution negatively impacts public health and productivity.
Policy interventions can reduce economic losses from pollution.
Significance of the study
The study will provide critical insights for local government and stakeholders to develop cost-effective pollution control measures that support economic growth and public health improvements in Aba North (Okeke, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the economic implications of environmental pollution in Aba North Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Environmental Pollution: The introduction of harmful substances into the environment (Ebele, 2024).
Economic Implications: The financial effects resulting from environmental degradation (Okeke, 2023).
