Background of the study
Cattle grazing is a traditional practice that contributes to rural livelihoods; however, its environmental implications, particularly forest depletion, are becoming increasingly evident. In Ikare-Akoko, extensive grazing has been linked to significant loss of forest cover, affecting biodiversity and contributing to climate change. Recent research (Oluwole, 2023; Balogun, 2024) indicates that overgrazing, combined with poor land management practices, leads to accelerated deforestation and habitat fragmentation. This study examines the historical relationship between cattle grazing and forest resources in the area, assessing the ecological balance and the socio-economic factors driving these practices. It discusses the complex interplay between agricultural needs and environmental conservation, emphasizing sustainable grazing practices and policy reforms. By integrating ecological studies with socio-economic analysis, the research seeks to identify viable strategies to mitigate forest depletion while supporting rural communities (Oluwole, 2023).
Statement of the problem
In Ikare-Akoko, unregulated cattle grazing has contributed to severe forest depletion. The removal of vegetation and subsequent soil erosion have disrupted local ecosystems, leading to biodiversity loss and environmental instability. Despite traditional practices, modern grazing intensities have exceeded sustainable limits. This study aims to investigate the direct impacts of cattle grazing on forest resources and to recommend sustainable land management practices that balance economic benefits with environmental conservation (Balogun, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the impact of cattle grazing on forest cover.
To identify the factors leading to overgrazing.
To propose sustainable grazing practices.
Research questions:
How does cattle grazing contribute to forest depletion?
What socio-economic factors drive unsustainable grazing?
Which practices can mitigate the negative impacts of grazing?
Research Hypotheses:
Unregulated cattle grazing significantly depletes forest cover.
Socio-economic pressures intensify overgrazing practices.
Sustainable grazing practices can reduce forest depletion.
Significance of the study
The study will inform local policymakers and agricultural extension services on balancing economic needs with environmental sustainability. Its recommendations aim to preserve forest resources while supporting rural livelihoods in Ikare-Akoko (Oluwole, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the impact of cattle grazing on forest depletion in Ikare-Akoko Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Cattle Grazing: The practice of allowing cattle to feed on natural vegetation (Balogun, 2024).
Forest Depletion: The reduction of forest cover due to anthropogenic activities (Oluwole, 2023).
Sustainable Practices: Methods that maintain ecological balance while meeting current needs (Balogun, 2024).
