Background of the study
Bush burning is a common agricultural practice employed for land clearing and pest control, yet its environmental consequences can be detrimental. In Ikole, the widespread use of bush burning has raised concerns about its impact on soil fertility and long-term agricultural productivity (Akinola, 2023). The practice leads to the loss of organic matter, degradation of soil structure, and release of greenhouse gases, which can ultimately reduce crop yields and undermine food security (Olatunde, 2024). While bush burning may offer short-term benefits in terms of land preparation, its long-term environmental costs are significant. Recent studies highlight the need to balance traditional agricultural practices with sustainable land management to preserve soil health (Akinola, 2023). This research will examine the effects of bush burning on agricultural productivity in Ikole, assessing both the immediate and cumulative impacts on soil quality and crop performance (Olatunde, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Ikole Local Government Area is witnessing a decline in agricultural productivity, largely attributed to the widespread practice of bush burning. The rapid loss of soil fertility due to repeated burning has negatively impacted crop yields and overall food security. Despite the short-term benefits of land clearing, the long-term environmental degradation poses significant challenges for sustainable agriculture. The study aims to investigate the extent to which bush burning affects soil health and agricultural productivity, and to identify alternative land management practices that could mitigate these adverse impacts (Akinola, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the impact of bush burning on soil fertility in Ikole.

  2. To evaluate the effect on crop yields and agricultural productivity.

  3. To propose sustainable land management alternatives.

Research questions:

  1. How does bush burning affect soil fertility in Ikole?

  2. What is the impact of bush burning on agricultural productivity?

  3. What sustainable alternatives can replace bush burning practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Bush burning significantly reduces soil organic matter in Ikole.

  2. Repeated bush burning negatively impacts crop yields.

  3. Adoption of sustainable land management practices can improve agricultural productivity.

Significance of the study
The study offers critical insights into the detrimental effects of bush burning on agriculture, providing guidance for policymakers, agricultural extension services, and farmers. The findings will support the transition towards more sustainable land management practices that enhance soil health and boost crop productivity (Olatunde, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing the effect of bush burning on agricultural productivity in Ikole Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  • Bush Burning: The deliberate setting of vegetation on fire for land clearing.

  • Agricultural Productivity: The output of agricultural goods per unit area of land.

  • Sustainable Land Management: Practices that maintain or improve land productivity while preserving environmental quality.
