Background of the study
Flooding is a recurring natural disaster that severely impacts urban and rural communities. In Ilorin East, government interventions in flood control have been implemented to mitigate damage and safeguard lives and property (Balogun, 2023). These measures include the construction of drainage systems, flood barriers, and early warning systems, aimed at reducing the impact of heavy rainfall and rising water levels (Olawale, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these interventions remains a subject of debate as communities continue to experience significant flood-related challenges. Studies suggest that while some interventions have yielded positive results, others have been hindered by inadequate planning, resource constraints, and maintenance issues (Balogun, 2023). This research will critically evaluate the efficacy of government flood control measures in Ilorin East, assessing both infrastructural and community-based approaches, and will explore potential areas for improvement (Olawale, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Ilorin East Local Government Area continues to face recurrent flood events despite various government interventions aimed at flood control. The persistence of flood-related damage highlights gaps in current strategies, including deficiencies in infrastructure maintenance and community preparedness. These challenges have resulted in significant economic and social disruptions. The study aims to identify the shortcomings in current government interventions, evaluate their overall effectiveness, and propose enhancements to better protect communities from future flood risks (Balogun, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of government flood control interventions in Ilorin East.

  2. To assess community preparedness and response to flood events.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving flood management strategies.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are the current government interventions in controlling floods?

  2. What is the level of community preparedness for flood events?

  3. What improvements can be made to existing flood management strategies?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Government interventions have significantly reduced flood damage in Ilorin East.

  2. Community preparedness is positively correlated with the success of flood control measures.

  3. Enhanced infrastructure maintenance can further reduce flood-related damages.

Significance of the study
This study provides an in-depth evaluation of flood control interventions, offering critical insights for policymakers, urban planners, and disaster management agencies. Its findings aim to strengthen future flood management strategies, minimize economic losses, and improve community resilience (Olawale, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating government flood control interventions in Ilorin East Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  • Flood Control Interventions: Measures and infrastructures implemented to mitigate flooding.

  • Community Preparedness: The readiness of a community to respond to flood events.

  • Infrastructure Maintenance: The upkeep and repair of flood control structures.
