Background of the Study
Urban migration in Uhunmwonde has resulted in significant socio-cultural transformations, particularly affecting indigenous food culture. As populations shift from rural to urban settings, traditional culinary practices are increasingly challenged by the influx of modern dietary preferences and industrial food production methods (Ibeh, 2023). Indigenous food culture, characterized by the use of locally sourced ingredients and traditional cooking methods, is at risk of being marginalized amid urban lifestyles that favor convenience and globalized cuisines (Oghene, 2024). This migration not only alters eating habits but also disrupts the intergenerational transmission of culinary knowledge. Many community members express concern that traditional recipes and cooking techniques may be lost as younger generations adapt to urban norms (Ukpai, 2025). Scholars argue that preserving indigenous food culture is essential for maintaining cultural identity and promoting sustainable local agriculture. This study explores the multifaceted impact of urban migration on indigenous food practices in Uhunmwonde, examining both the erosion of traditional culinary knowledge and opportunities for innovation that may arise through adaptive strategies (Eboh, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Urban migration has led to a noticeable decline in indigenous food practices in Uhunmwonde, where traditional culinary skills are increasingly neglected (Ojukwu, 2023). The shift toward urban lifestyles, characterized by fast-food consumption and global dietary trends, poses a threat to local food heritage. This transformation results in the loss of unique culinary identities and traditional nutritional practices. There is an urgent need to understand these dynamics and propose strategies to preserve indigenous food culture amidst rapid urbanization (Adeniran, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To investigate the effects of urban migration on indigenous food practices.
2. To document changes in traditional culinary methods.
3. To recommend sustainable strategies for preserving local food culture.
Research Questions:
1. How has urban migration influenced indigenous food practices in Uhunmwonde?
2. What traditional culinary methods are most affected?
3. What measures can be implemented to preserve indigenous food culture?
Research Hypotheses:
1. H1: Urban migration has a negative impact on traditional food practices.
2. H2: There is a significant loss of indigenous culinary knowledge among urban migrants.
3. H3: Community-based initiatives can sustain traditional food culture.
Significance of the Study
This study is important as it highlights the impact of urban migration on local food heritage, offering insights for policymakers and community leaders. The findings aim to guide efforts in preserving indigenous culinary traditions while accommodating urban lifestyles (Oghene, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses solely on the impact of urban migration on indigenous food culture in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State.
Definitions of Terms:
• Urban Migration: The movement of people from rural to urban areas.
• Indigenous Food Culture: Traditional culinary practices and local food heritage.
• Culinary Knowledge: The body of knowledge related to traditional cooking techniques and recipes.
