Background of the Study:
Effective waste management is integral to environmental sustainability and public health. In Uhunmwonde, escalating urbanization has intensified waste generation, prompting local authorities to implement various management strategies (Ighodaro, 2023). These strategies include recycling initiatives, waste segregation at the source, and community-based clean-up programs. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, low public awareness, and inefficient collection systems persist, undermining the sustainability goals (Obi, 2024). Environmental sustainability is further threatened by improper disposal methods that lead to soil and water contamination. Recent studies indicate that while efforts have been made to promote sustainable waste management practices, the integration of innovative technologies and strict regulatory measures remains limited (Ajayi, 2025). A comprehensive evaluation of these practices is necessary to understand their environmental impact, address operational challenges, and propose sustainable solutions that can enhance overall ecological balance (Uche, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite various waste management initiatives in Uhunmwonde, the area continues to face significant environmental challenges, including pollution and inefficient recycling systems. This study seeks to identify the critical gaps in current practices that hinder environmental sustainability, emphasizing the need for improved technologies and community engagement (Eze, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess existing waste management practices in Uhunmwonde.

  2. To evaluate their environmental impacts and sustainability.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving waste management systems.
    Research Questions:

  4. What are the predominant waste management practices in Uhunmwonde?

  5. How do these practices affect environmental sustainability?

  6. What measures can enhance waste management efficiency?
    Research Hypotheses:

  7. Current waste management practices negatively affect environmental sustainability.

  8. Public awareness significantly influences effective waste management.

  9. Implementation of innovative technologies improves waste management efficiency.
    Significance of the Study:
This study provides critical insights into the environmental impacts of waste management practices in Uhunmwonde. Its findings will inform policymakers and environmental agencies on sustainable strategies for waste reduction and recycling, thereby promoting ecological balance and public health (Nnamdi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
    Limited to the topic only.
    Definitions of Terms:

  • Waste Management: The collection, treatment, and disposal of waste materials.

  • Environmental Sustainability: Practices that support long-term ecological balance.

  • Recycling: The process of converting waste into reusable material.
