Background of the Study

Indigenous music is a vital form of cultural expression that plays a significant role in the socialization of youth. In Ile-Ife, traditional music not only entertains but also serves as a medium for transmitting cultural values, historical narratives, and social norms (Adewale, 2023). Youth engagement with indigenous music fosters a strong sense of identity and belonging, as it connects them to their cultural roots and community heritage (Babatunde, 2024). However, the growing influence of global music genres and modern entertainment technologies has raised concerns about the declining role of traditional music in youth socialization (Folorunsho, 2025). This study assesses how indigenous music contributes to the social development of young people in Ile-Ife, evaluating its role in cultural education and community cohesion while exploring strategies to revitalize its influence (Adewale, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of indigenous music in fostering cultural identity among youth, its influence is diminishing in Ile-Ife due to the dominance of global music and modern media. This decline may weaken the transmission of traditional values and cultural continuity among young people (Babatunde, 2024). The study seeks to evaluate the extent of this decline, identify contributing factors, and propose measures to enhance the role of indigenous music in youth socialization (Folorunsho, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the influence of indigenous music on youth socialization.

2. To identify factors contributing to the decline in traditional music engagement among youth.

3. To propose strategies for revitalizing the role of indigenous music in cultural socialization.

Research Questions:

1. How does indigenous music influence youth socialization in Ile-Ife?

2. What factors contribute to the decline of traditional music engagement among youth?

3. What measures can enhance the role of indigenous music in youth cultural education?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Indigenous music significantly influences youth socialization.

2. Modern media exposure negatively impacts engagement with traditional music.

3. Community initiatives can enhance the role of indigenous music in youth socialization.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the critical role of indigenous music in shaping youth socialization, providing insights into preserving cultural identity. The findings will aid educators, cultural practitioners, and policymakers in developing programs that integrate traditional music into youth development, thereby reinforcing cultural heritage and community cohesion (Adewale, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing the role of indigenous music in youth socialization in Ile-Ife Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on cultural practices and their influence on youth behavior.

2. Youth Socialization: The process through which young individuals acquire cultural values and norms.
