Background of the Study
Informal transportation systems have become an integral component of urban mobility in many developing regions, particularly in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area. These systems, comprising privately owned vehicles, motorized tricycles, and shared taxis, provide affordable and accessible transportation options to a large segment of the urban population (Adeyemi, 2023). However, the rapid growth of these informal modes has raised concerns regarding safety, efficiency, and regulatory oversight (Balogun, 2024). Urban mobility in Ibadan is challenged by congestion, inconsistent service quality, and a lack of formal governance mechanisms. The dynamics of informal transport affect commuting patterns, economic activities, and overall urban productivity. Research indicates that while these systems offer flexibility and job opportunities, they may also contribute to increased traffic congestion and accidents (Folarin, 2025). Thus, understanding the balance between the benefits and drawbacks of informal transportation is crucial for planning effective urban mobility strategies. The study builds on current evidence and integrates perspectives from urban planning and transport economics to propose actionable recommendations (Olaniyi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Ibadan South-West faces urban mobility challenges due to the prevalence of informal transportation systems. The lack of structured regulation has led to issues of safety, traffic congestion, and service inconsistency. Although these systems cater to the transportation needs of many residents, they are also linked to increased accidents and inefficiencies. The problem is compounded by the absence of coordinated urban transport planning, creating barriers to sustainable mobility. This study aims to examine the impact of informal transportation on urban mobility and identify potential regulatory frameworks to enhance service quality and safety (Olatunde, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the operational dynamics of informal transportation in Ibadan South-West.
To assess the impact of these systems on urban mobility and traffic management.
To propose regulatory measures that can enhance the efficiency and safety of informal transport.
Research Questions
What are the characteristics of informal transportation in the area?
How do these transportation systems affect urban traffic congestion?
What regulatory interventions can improve the efficiency of informal transport services?
Research Hypotheses
H₁: Informal transportation significantly contributes to urban traffic congestion.
H₂: There is a significant relationship between informal transport operations and the rate of traffic accidents.
H₃: Implementing regulatory measures will enhance the overall efficiency of urban mobility.
Significance of the Study
This research is significant as it illuminates the complex role of informal transportation in urban mobility. The outcomes will benefit policymakers, urban planners, and transport operators by suggesting sustainable regulatory frameworks to improve efficiency and safety in urban transit systems (Akinola, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing the informal transportation systems and their impact on urban mobility within Ibadan South-West Local Government Area. It does not cover other regions or delve into long-term trends beyond the current analysis.
Definitions of Terms
Informal Transportation: Non-regulated, privately owned transit services operating outside formal governmental oversight.
Urban Mobility: The ease and efficiency with which people move within an urban area.
Regulatory Framework: A set of rules and guidelines designed to govern the operations and safety standards of transportation systems.
