Background of the Study
Environmental pollution has increasingly become a critical public health concern in many urban and semi-urban areas, particularly in Eleme Local Government Area. Rapid industrialization, unregulated waste disposal, and emissions from factories have contributed to deteriorating air, water, and soil quality in the region (Obi, 2023). The residents have reported higher incidences of respiratory problems, skin irritations, and other chronic conditions linked to environmental contaminants. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to pollutants results in significant health challenges, placing additional pressure on local healthcare systems (Ike, 2024). In Eleme, the intersection of environmental degradation and public health necessitates urgent attention as both environmental quality and health outcomes are intertwined (Okoro, 2023). Increased urban activities and industrial sprawl have also exacerbated these problems, making it imperative to understand the extent of pollution’s impact on community health. Recent literature emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to address these issues by integrating environmental science, public policy, and healthcare interventions (Adebayo, 2024). Moreover, the residents’ livelihood and well-being are closely linked to environmental conditions, underscoring the importance of comprehensive research and sustainable policy implementations.
Statement of the Problem
Residents in Eleme Local Government Area have experienced a noticeable decline in health quality due to environmental pollution. The lack of adequate environmental regulations and poor waste management practices have resulted in increased exposure to harmful pollutants. Consequently, the local healthcare system is overwhelmed by cases of respiratory and skin diseases, among others. The absence of systematic monitoring and limited community awareness further complicate mitigation efforts. This study seeks to identify the extent of pollution, its direct impact on residents’ health, and explore sustainable interventions to improve both environmental quality and public health (Ekene, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the levels and types of environmental pollutants in Eleme.
To examine the correlation between pollution exposure and residents’ health outcomes.
To propose sustainable interventions for pollution control and health improvement.
Research Questions
What are the primary pollutants affecting Eleme residents?
How does exposure to these pollutants impact the prevalence of health issues?
What sustainable measures can be implemented to mitigate environmental pollution?
Research Hypotheses
H₁: Higher pollution levels are significantly associated with increased respiratory problems among residents.
H₂: There is a statistically significant relationship between industrial emissions and chronic health issues in the community.
H₃: Implementation of strict environmental regulations will lead to improved health outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into how environmental pollution affects human health in Eleme. Findings will guide policymakers, health professionals, and environmental agencies in formulating effective interventions and sustainable policies that protect public health and the environment (Chukwu, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to assessing environmental pollution and its direct impact on the health of residents in Eleme Local Government Area. It does not extend to broader regional comparisons or incorporate long-term temporal analysis beyond the current study parameters.
Definitions of Terms
Environmental Pollution: The introduction of harmful substances into the natural environment that cause adverse changes.
Public Health: The science and practice of preventing disease and promoting health within populations.
Sustainable Interventions: Measures designed to produce long-lasting positive effects on the environment and community health.
