Background of the Study
Social class is a significant determinant of educational outcomes, affecting access to resources, quality of instruction, and overall academic achievement. In Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State, disparities in social class manifest in unequal educational opportunities and performance gaps among students (Uche, 2023). Students from higher socio-economic backgrounds typically have access to better learning environments, supplementary educational materials, and enhanced support systems, which collectively contribute to higher academic achievement. Conversely, those from lower social classes often face challenges such as inadequate facilities, financial constraints, and limited access to quality instruction (Okoro, 2024). Recent research underscores the importance of addressing these disparities to promote equitable education and social mobility (Eze, 2025). This study examines how social class influences academic achievement, with the aim of identifying effective interventions that can bridge the educational gap and foster greater equity within the schooling system.

Statement of the Problem
In Umuahia South, social class disparities contribute significantly to unequal academic achievement. Students from lower socio-economic backgrounds face limited access to quality educational resources and support, leading to lower performance levels (Uche, 2023). These inequities hinder social mobility and perpetuate cycles of poverty. The study seeks to explore the extent to which social class impacts academic outcomes and to identify strategies to mitigate these disparities. Addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring that all students, regardless of their socio-economic status, have equal opportunities for educational success.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the impact of social class on academic achievement.

To identify disparities in resource allocation based on social class.

To propose strategies to bridge the educational gap.

Research Questions:

How does social class affect academic achievement?

What disparities exist in educational resource allocation?

What measures can reduce the impact of social class on academic performance?

Research Hypotheses:

Social class significantly affects academic achievement.

Resource disparities are more pronounced among lower social classes.

Targeted interventions can mitigate the negative effects of social class.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of social class on academic achievement, shedding light on the root causes of educational inequities. The findings will inform policymakers and educators about the need for targeted resource allocation and support programs, ultimately promoting greater educational equity and social mobility in the region.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of social class on academic achievement in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State. It does not consider other factors influencing educational outcomes outside social class.

Definitions of Terms:

Social Class: The hierarchical categorization of individuals based on economic and social status.

Academic Achievement: The level of success attained by a student in educational settings.

Equity: The fair distribution of educational resources and opportunities.
