Background of the Study
Parental involvement is widely recognized as a key factor in students’ academic success. In Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, active parental engagement can enhance learning by providing emotional support, resources, and reinforcement of educational values (Nnamdi, 2023). Parents who participate in school activities, monitor homework, and maintain regular communication with teachers contribute to a more positive learning environment. Research suggests that high levels of parental involvement are associated with improved student performance, better attendance, and higher motivation (Chukwu, 2024). However, challenges such as work commitments, socio-economic constraints, and cultural factors may limit the extent of parental participation (Obi, 2025). This study aims to appraise the effects of parental involvement on student achievement and identify ways to foster stronger home–school partnerships to support educational outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the proven benefits of parental involvement, many students in Nsukka experience limited support at home, which adversely affects their academic performance (Nnamdi, 2023). Factors such as parents’ busy schedules, low educational backgrounds, and economic hardships hinder active engagement in their children’s education. This lack of involvement contributes to lower academic achievement and reduced motivation among students. The study seeks to explore these issues in detail and determine effective strategies to enhance parental participation in the educational process, thereby improving student outcomes.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of parental involvement on academic performance.
To identify barriers to effective parental engagement.
To propose strategies to improve parental involvement in education.
Research Questions:
How does parental involvement affect student achievement?
What are the major barriers to parental engagement?
What interventions can enhance parental participation?
Research Hypotheses:
Increased parental involvement leads to higher academic performance.
Socio-economic factors significantly limit parental engagement.
Targeted interventions can effectively improve parental involvement.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the effects of parental involvement on educational outcomes. The findings will inform educators and policymakers about the critical role of parents in academic success and suggest practical measures to enhance home–school partnerships. Improved parental engagement can lead to better academic performance and a more supportive learning environment.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to appraising the effects of parental involvement in students’ education in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State. It does not extend to other forms of educational support or regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Parental Involvement: Active participation of parents in their child’s educational activities.
Academic Achievement: The level of success a student attains in their studies.
Home–School Partnership: Collaborative relationship between parents and school authorities.
