Background of the Study
Child labor remains a persistent challenge in many developing regions, often detracting from the educational opportunities available to young learners. In Oron Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, the practice of child labor significantly interferes with students’ ability to attend school regularly and achieve academic success (Akpan, 2023). Economic pressures and cultural practices sometimes compel children to engage in laborious activities at the expense of their education. This phenomenon negatively impacts cognitive development, classroom participation, and overall academic attainment. Recent studies have linked child labor with increased dropout rates and reduced academic performance, highlighting its long-term implications on individual and community development (Udo, 2024). Moreover, governmental and non-governmental organizations have called for enhanced monitoring and policy enforcement to address this issue (Ndukwe, 2025). By exploring the multifaceted effects of child labor on educational outcomes, this research aims to offer critical insights that can inform intervention strategies and policy reforms to safeguard the educational rights of children in the region.

Statement of the Problem
Child labor in Oron Local Government Area poses a serious threat to educational attainment, as students are often compelled to work instead of attending classes. This situation has resulted in high dropout rates, lower academic performance, and long-term socio-economic disadvantages (Akpan, 2023). Limited regulatory enforcement and cultural acceptance further exacerbate the problem, leaving many children deprived of their right to education. Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive investigation into the factors driving child labor and its adverse impact on schooling.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To determine the impact of child labor on students’ educational attainment.
  2. To identify socio-economic factors contributing to child labor.
  3. To propose measures to reduce child labor and enhance educational participation.

Research Questions:

  1. How does child labor affect educational attainment in the region?
  2. What socio-economic factors drive child labor practices?
  3. What interventions can improve school attendance among working children?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Child labor significantly reduces students’ educational attainment.
  2. Economic factors are major contributors to child labor.
  3. Policy interventions can effectively reduce child labor and improve attendance.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it investigates the detrimental effects of child labor on educational attainment, providing essential insights for policymakers and educators. The research highlights the need for stringent enforcement of child labor laws and improved educational support, ultimately guiding interventions to ensure children’s right to education is upheld and their academic potential fully realized.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of child labor on students’ educational attainment in Oron Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. It does not cover other factors influencing education outside of child labor.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Child Labor: The engagement of children in work that deprives them of educational opportunities.
  • Educational Attainment: The highest level of education completed by an individual.
  • Intervention: Measures implemented to mitigate the negative effects of child labor on education.
