Background of the study
Kinship networks have traditionally underpinned economic activities in many Nigerian communities, providing informal systems of support that bolster business sustainability. In Nnewi North Local Government Area, Anambra State, these networks offer entrepreneurs access to financial resources, labor, and market information, which help mitigate the risks associated with business ventures (Ndu, 2023). Family ties and communal bonds facilitate trust and cooperation, enabling business owners to secure loans, share knowledge, and pool resources. Such networks are particularly crucial in environments where formal financial institutions may not adequately meet the needs of small-scale enterprises (Uche, 2024). Over time, the integration of kinship networks into business operations has become a vital strategy for maintaining continuity, fostering innovation, and enhancing competitiveness. However, there are challenges as well; over-reliance on familial support can sometimes restrict exposure to broader market opportunities and professional expertise. This study examines the multifaceted role of kinship networks in sustaining businesses in Nnewi North, investigating both the benefits and limitations of these traditional support systems and exploring ways to integrate them effectively with modern business practices.

Statement of the problem
Despite the benefits of kinship networks in providing essential support, businesses in Nnewi North face challenges as traditional ties sometimes limit innovation and market expansion (Ndu, 2023). Over-dependence on familial networks may result in insular business practices that exclude external expertise and capital, hindering competitiveness in a rapidly changing economic landscape (Uche, 2024). As market dynamics evolve, the limitations of relying solely on kinship support become evident, creating a need to assess how these networks can be adapted to better serve modern business needs. This study aims to identify the constraints of traditional kinship structures and explore how they might be integrated with contemporary business practices to enhance sustainability.

Objectives of the study (3):

  1. To investigate the influence of kinship networks on business sustainability in Nnewi North.

  2. To identify the benefits and limitations of relying on kinship ties.

  3. To develop recommendations for integrating kinship support with modern business practices.

Research questions (3):

  1. How do kinship networks contribute to business sustainability in Nnewi North?

  2. What challenges arise from an over-reliance on kinship support?

  3. How can traditional kinship networks be integrated with modern business strategies?

Research Hypotheses (3):

  1. Kinship networks significantly enhance business sustainability.

  2. Over-reliance on kinship ties limits business innovation.

  3. Integrating modern practices with traditional networks improves overall business performance.

Significance of the study
This study highlights the critical role of kinship networks in sustaining businesses in Nnewi North. By exploring both advantages and challenges, the research provides insights for entrepreneurs and policymakers on leveraging traditional support systems while incorporating modern business strategies. The findings aim to foster improved competitiveness and sustainable economic growth through a balanced integration of social capital (Ndu, 2023; Uche, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the influence of kinship networks on business sustainability within Nnewi North Local Government Area, focusing on informal support systems and their integration with business operations.
