Background of the Study:
Political parties are integral to the promotion of good governance, particularly at the grassroots level where direct citizen engagement is most visible. In Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State, political parties play a multifaceted role in mobilizing voters, shaping policy agendas, and ensuring accountability among elected officials. This study examines how party structures and activities contribute to improved governance outcomes. The grassroots engagement initiatives organized by political parties have, in recent years, led to enhanced civic participation and heightened scrutiny of government performance (Ogun, 2023). By organizing rallies, town hall meetings, and policy discussions, political parties create avenues for direct communication between citizens and policymakers. However, challenges such as internal party conflicts, external political pressures, and the commercialization of party politics can hinder these efforts, thereby affecting the overall quality of governance. Recent research underscores that when political parties remain committed to democratic principles and internal accountability, they significantly contribute to transparent and responsive governance (Akinola, 2024). This study, therefore, seeks to explore the extent to which political parties in Ilesa East foster good governance practices at the grassroots level and to identify strategies to strengthen their role in promoting inclusive development (Babatunde, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the recognized role of political parties in advancing good governance, Ilesa East faces challenges that undermine these efforts. Internal factionalism, external political interference, and the over-commercialization of political activities have diluted the effectiveness of grassroots mobilization. These challenges result in a gap between the parties’ stated democratic objectives and their actual performance in promoting transparency and accountability. Consequently, there is a need to investigate how these factors affect the overall governance landscape and to propose measures that can realign party activities with the ideals of good governance (Ola, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the contribution of political parties to good governance at the grassroots in Ilesa East.

  2. To identify challenges hindering effective party-led governance initiatives.

  3. To recommend strategies to enhance the role of political parties in promoting transparency and accountability.

Research Questions:

  1. How do political parties contribute to good governance at the grassroots?

  2. What challenges impede effective governance promotion by these parties?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve their performance?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Active participation by political parties significantly improves governance outcomes in Ilesa East.

  2. H₂: Internal conflicts within parties negatively affect their ability to promote good governance.

  3. H₃: Strengthening party accountability mechanisms will enhance grassroots governance.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it examines the pivotal role of political parties in fostering good governance at the grassroots. The insights derived will aid in the formulation of strategies to overcome existing challenges and enhance transparency, thereby contributing to more robust and accountable local governance in Ilesa East (Olayinka, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Political Parties: Organized groups that contest elections and seek to influence public policy.

  2. Good Governance: The effective, transparent, and accountable management of public affairs.

  3. Grassroots Engagement: The involvement and participation of ordinary citizens in the political process.
