Background of the Study
Youth-led political movements have become a dynamic force in redefining the landscape of local governance. In Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State, emerging youth activism has not only challenged traditional power structures but also promoted innovative approaches to political engagement (Balogun, 2023). The surge in social media usage, coupled with increased political awareness among young people, has fostered a culture of mobilization and advocacy that transcends conventional political boundaries (Afolabi, 2024). These movements advocate for transparency, accountability, and inclusive policy-making, often using grassroots organizing and digital platforms to amplify their voices. However, the integration of youth perspectives into established governance structures remains uneven due to systemic resistance, limited institutional support, and intergenerational divides (Olayinka, 2025). The study explores the evolution of youth-led movements in Sagamu, analyzing their impact on local governance and the ways in which they challenge existing political norms. By critically assessing the strategies and outcomes of youth activism, the research aims to provide insights into how the energy and creativity of the younger generation can contribute to more responsive and accountable governance in local contexts.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident dynamism of youth-led political movements in Sagamu, there exists a gap between their aspirations and tangible policy influence. The traditional political environment in Sagamu often sidelines youthful initiatives, resulting in minimal representation and a lack of responsiveness to the innovative ideas presented by young activists (Afolabi, 2024). Additionally, institutional inertia and resistance from established political actors further hinder the incorporation of youth perspectives into decision-making processes (Olayinka, 2025). This disconnect not only marginalizes young voices but also limits the potential for progressive reforms. The study aims to investigate these challenges, critically examining how structural barriers and entrenched political practices restrict the impact of youth-led movements, and to propose measures for enhancing their influence on governance (Balogun, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the emergence and strategies of youth-led political movements in Sagamu.

  2. To assess the impact of these movements on local governance and policy-making.

  3. To recommend approaches for enhancing the integration of youth perspectives in local government.

Research Questions:

  1. What factors drive youth-led political mobilization in Sagamu?

  2. How do youth movements influence policy decisions in local governance?

  3. What strategies can be adopted to better integrate youth initiatives into mainstream political processes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Youth-led political movements positively influence local policy reforms.

  2. H2: Institutional resistance significantly limits the impact of youth activism.

  3. H3: Enhanced engagement of young people leads to more innovative governance solutions.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the transformative potential of youth-led political movements in Sagamu. By examining the challenges and successes of youth activism, the research offers critical insights for policymakers, activists, and community leaders on harnessing youthful energy for effective governance. The findings can foster an environment where innovative ideas are incorporated into policy-making, ultimately promoting more inclusive and forward-thinking local governance (Balogun, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing the influence of youth-led political movements on governance in Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State, focusing solely on local dynamics without extending to broader national trends.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Youth-led Movements: Political and social initiatives predominantly driven by young people.

  2. Political Mobilization: The process by which individuals or groups engage in political activities to influence public policy.

  3. Governance: The systems and processes through which public policies are formulated and implemented.
