Background of the study
Political mobilization strategies have become a central focus in enhancing voter turnout and strengthening democratic participation at the grassroots level. In Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, political parties and civic organizations employ various strategies—such as rallies, door-to-door campaigns, and social media outreach—to motivate citizens to participate in elections. These mobilization efforts are crucial in addressing voter apathy and ensuring that election results reflect the true will of the people (Adejumo, 2023). Recent studies suggest that effective mobilization can overcome challenges such as political disengagement, misinformation, and logistical barriers to voting (Ibitayo, 2024). However, the success of these strategies depends on several factors, including the accessibility of information, the credibility of political actors, and the socio-cultural context of the electorate (Olayinka, 2025). This study evaluates the effectiveness of different political mobilization strategies in increasing voter turnout in Akure South. By analyzing campaign methods and their outcomes, the research aims to identify best practices that can be replicated to enhance democratic engagement and improve electoral outcomes at the local level.

Statement of the problem
Despite the implementation of various political mobilization strategies in Akure South, voter turnout remains suboptimal. The persistence of voter apathy, compounded by misinformation and logistical challenges, has resulted in electoral participation that does not accurately represent the community’s demographic profile. This shortfall undermines the legitimacy of electoral outcomes and limits the scope for inclusive governance. The study seeks to identify the shortcomings in current mobilization efforts and understand the factors that deter voter participation. By addressing these challenges, the research aims to propose interventions that can enhance voter turnout and thereby strengthen the democratic process in Akure South.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of political mobilization strategies in Akure South.

  2. To identify factors that hinder voter turnout despite mobilization efforts.

  3. To propose improved strategies for enhancing electoral participation.

Research questions:

  1. What political mobilization strategies are currently used in Akure South?

  2. How do these strategies influence voter turnout?

  3. What additional measures can increase electoral participation?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Effective political mobilization strategies lead to higher voter turnout.

  2. H2: Misinformation and logistical challenges negatively affect voter participation.

  3. H3: Enhanced community outreach will significantly improve electoral engagement.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive evaluation of political mobilization strategies and their impact on voter turnout in Akure South. The findings will inform political parties, electoral commissions, and civil society organizations about the most effective methods to encourage voter participation. Enhanced mobilization efforts are expected to lead to more representative electoral outcomes and strengthen democratic processes at the local level (Ajani, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating political mobilization strategies and their effects on voter turnout within Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State. It focuses exclusively on local electoral campaigns and voter engagement.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Political Mobilization: The process of encouraging and organizing citizens to participate in political activities and elections.

  2. Voter Turnout: The proportion of eligible voters who cast ballots during an election.

  3. Electoral Participation: The engagement of citizens in the voting process and related political activities.
