Background of the study
Traditional coronation rituals in Benin City have long been intertwined with the notions of political legitimacy and authority. These ceremonies, steeped in centuries-old traditions, serve not only as cultural events but also as symbolic reinforcements of political power and social order (Omoruyi, 2023). In Edo State, the coronation of traditional rulers is perceived as a reaffirmation of the community’s historical continuity and political stability. The rituals incorporate elaborate ceremonies, regalia, and ancestral invocations that collectively confer legitimacy upon the rulers (Obioma, 2024). Such practices play a dual role by preserving cultural identity and legitimizing contemporary governance structures within the traditional sphere (Osaigbovo, 2023). However, the influence of these rituals in the modern political landscape is subject to debate, as they often exist alongside democratic institutions and formal electoral processes. Scholars argue that while coronation rituals enhance cultural pride, they may also obscure accountability and transparency in governance (Afolabi, 2024). This study critically examines the impact of traditional coronation rituals on political legitimacy in Benin City, exploring the balance between cultural heritage and modern democratic expectations (Igbinedion, 2023).
Statement of the problem
The integration of traditional coronation rituals into the modern political framework of Benin City raises questions about their impact on political legitimacy. While these rituals bestow cultural authority, concerns persist regarding their potential to perpetuate undemocratic practices and undermine accountability (Osagie, 2023). The ceremonial nature of coronations can sometimes mask underlying power imbalances and obscure the need for transparent governance. Additionally, the coexistence of traditional legitimacy with formal political processes may create confusion among the citizenry regarding the sources of authority and accountability. These challenges necessitate a critical investigation into how traditional coronation rituals influence political perceptions and governance, especially in an era where democratic values are increasingly prioritized (Edegbe, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To examine the role of traditional coronation rituals in establishing political legitimacy in Benin City.
To identify the tensions between traditional and modern sources of political authority.
To suggest measures for harmonizing cultural practices with democratic governance.
Research questions:
How do traditional coronation rituals contribute to political legitimacy in Benin City?
What are the challenges posed by the coexistence of traditional and modern political systems?
How can traditional rituals be integrated into democratic governance frameworks?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Traditional coronation rituals significantly enhance political legitimacy among local communities.
H2: The coexistence of traditional and modern political practices creates accountability challenges.
H3: Harmonization of cultural rituals with democratic processes improves governance transparency.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the intricate relationship between traditional cultural practices and modern political legitimacy. Its findings will inform discussions on how to balance respect for cultural heritage with the demands for transparent, accountable governance. The insights gained will be valuable to traditional rulers, policymakers, and political analysts seeking to integrate traditional authority with contemporary democratic practices, ultimately contributing to more stable and legitimate governance in Benin City (Uduak, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to assessing the impact of traditional coronation rituals on political legitimacy within Benin City, focusing on cultural and political dimensions without extending to other regions.
Definitions of terms:
Traditional Coronation Rituals: Ceremonial practices conducted to install and legitimize traditional rulers.
Political Legitimacy: The acceptance and justification of authority by the governed.
Benin City: A historic urban center in Edo State known for its rich cultural heritage.
