Background of the Study
Urban flooding has become a recurrent and devastating phenomenon in many Nigerian cities, with significant socio-economic consequences. In Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria, frequent flooding events disrupt daily life, damage property, and negatively impact local economies. Rapid urbanization, inadequate drainage systems, and poor waste management contribute to the severity and frequency of floods (Akpan, 2023). The socio-economic ramifications include loss of livelihoods, increased health risks, and infrastructural damage, which collectively hinder urban development. While some efforts have been made to mitigate flooding through infrastructural improvements and emergency response measures, challenges remain due to limited resources and inefficient planning (Mbanefo, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the causes of urban flooding in Calabar South, analyze its socio-economic impacts on residents, and assess the effectiveness of current mitigation strategies. By integrating quantitative data with community insights, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the flooding phenomenon and offer actionable recommendations for reducing its adverse effects on urban life. Ultimately, improved flood management will lead to a more resilient urban environment.

Statement of the Problem
Urban flooding in Calabar South has resulted in significant socio-economic challenges, affecting the livelihoods of residents and the overall urban infrastructure. Frequent flood events lead to property damage, loss of income, and disruptions in public services, thereby exacerbating poverty and social inequality (Akpan, 2023). The inadequacy of drainage systems and waste management practices further intensifies the problem (Mbanefo, 2024). The gap between policy measures and effective implementation has left communities vulnerable to recurrent flooding. This study aims to investigate the socio-economic consequences of urban flooding, focusing on the impact on residential stability, health, and economic activities. By identifying critical weaknesses in current flood management strategies, the research seeks to propose practical solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of flooding on urban communities.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the causes and frequency of urban flooding in Calabar South.

  2. To evaluate the socio-economic consequences of flooding on residents.

  3. To recommend effective flood mitigation and urban planning strategies.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the primary causes of urban flooding in Calabar South?

  2. How does flooding affect the socio-economic well-being of residents?

  3. What measures can mitigate the adverse impacts of urban flooding?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Urban flooding significantly disrupts socio-economic activities.

  2. H2: Inadequate urban planning exacerbates the impact of flooding.

  3. H3: Improved drainage and waste management reduce the severity of flooding.

Significance of the Study
This study provides essential insights into the socio-economic impacts of urban flooding, offering data-driven recommendations for policy and infrastructural improvements. The research aims to inform urban planners and government agencies on effective strategies to minimize flood damage and enhance community resilience. Its findings will contribute to sustainable urban development and improved quality of life in flood-prone areas of Calabar South (Akpan, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating urban flooding and its socio-economic consequences in Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria, focusing solely on flooding events and related impacts.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urban Flooding: Overflow of water in urban areas due to inadequate drainage.

  • Socio-Economic Consequences: The combined social and economic impacts of an event.

  • Mitigation Strategies: Measures aimed at reducing the severity of adverse impacts.
