Background of the Study :
Rural credit schemes are essential in promoting agricultural productivity by providing farmers with the necessary financial resources to invest in inputs, technology, and infrastructure. In Nigeria, particularly in Benue State, agriculture remains a critical economic activity, and access to credit has been identified as a key determinant of productivity. Since 2000, various rural credit programs have been implemented by both the government and financial institutions to support smallholder farmers and agro-based enterprises (Olabisi, 2023). These schemes are designed to enhance farm outputs, reduce poverty, and stimulate rural economic development. However, challenges such as high interest rates, limited financial literacy, and collateral requirements have often limited the accessibility and impact of these credit facilities. This study evaluates the impact of rural credit schemes on agricultural productivity in Benue State by analyzing lending data, farm output statistics, and farmer surveys. The research aims to understand the extent to which these credit schemes have improved agricultural performance and to identify barriers that hinder their effectiveness (Adegbola, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of rural credit schemes, agricultural productivity in Benue State has not improved to the expected levels. Many farmers face difficulties in accessing affordable credit due to stringent collateral demands and high interest rates, which limit their ability to invest in modern agricultural practices. This discrepancy between the availability of credit and its effective utilization hampers overall agricultural growth and rural development. This study seeks to identify the specific challenges that constrain the success of rural credit schemes and to evaluate their impact on agricultural productivity in Benue State (Olabisi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the impact of rural credit schemes on agricultural productivity.

To identify barriers to effective credit utilization among farmers.

To recommend strategies for improving rural credit access.

Research Questions:

How have rural credit schemes influenced agricultural productivity in Benue State?

What are the main challenges farmers face in accessing credit?

What measures can improve the effectiveness of rural credit schemes?

Research Hypotheses:

H1: Rural credit schemes significantly enhance agricultural productivity.

H2: Stringent credit requirements negatively impact scheme effectiveness.

H3: Improved credit access leads to higher farm outputs.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of rural credit schemes in boosting agricultural productivity in Benue State. The findings will provide insights for policymakers and financial institutions on overcoming barriers to credit access, thereby enhancing rural development and food security. Effective credit programs are vital for sustainable agricultural growth and poverty reduction (Adegbola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:
Rural Credit Schemes: Financial programs designed to provide loans to rural agricultural producers.
Agricultural Productivity: The efficiency with which agricultural inputs are converted into outputs.
Benue State: A region in Nigeria known for its agricultural activities, serving as the study area.
