Background of the Study

Urban planning is a critical factor in determining the trajectory of economic development, particularly in megacities like Lagos, where rapid urbanization presents both opportunities and challenges. In Lagos, urban planning initiatives are designed to manage population growth, improve infrastructure, and create sustainable living environments. These initiatives include zoning regulations, transportation development, and the provision of public amenities, all of which are intended to stimulate economic activities and attract investments (Ibrahim, 2023). Economic development in Lagos is closely linked to the efficiency of its urban planning strategies, as well-planned cities foster innovation, facilitate business operations, and enhance the quality of life for residents (Okafor, 2024). However, persistent issues such as inadequate infrastructure, informal settlements, and congestion continue to impede progress. Recent studies underscore the importance of integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into urban planning to achieve sustainable growth (Adeniran, 2025). This study critically examines the role of urban planning in promoting economic development in Lagos megacity, drawing on empirical data and case studies to evaluate the effectiveness of current policies and to identify potential areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite significant urban planning efforts in Lagos, the city continues to face severe challenges that hinder its economic development. Rapid population growth, infrastructural decay, and unregulated urban sprawl have led to congestion, environmental degradation, and a decline in living standards (Ibrahim, 2023). These issues not only affect the daily lives of residents but also deter potential investments and economic activities (Okafor, 2024). The gap between planning objectives and actual urban outcomes raises questions about the adequacy of current strategies. This study seeks to investigate the obstacles that prevent urban planning from effectively driving economic development in Lagos and to propose targeted interventions that address these critical challenges (Adeniran, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of urban planning on economic development in Lagos megacity.

2. To identify the key challenges in the implementation of urban planning policies.

3. To propose recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of urban planning initiatives.

Research Questions

1. How does urban planning influence economic development in Lagos?

2. What are the main challenges affecting urban planning outcomes in Lagos?

3. What policy interventions can improve urban planning and economic growth?

Research Hypotheses

1. Effective urban planning positively impacts economic development.

2. Implementation challenges significantly limit the benefits of urban planning initiatives.

3. Policy reforms aimed at integrated planning can enhance economic performance.

Significance of the Study (100 words)

This study is significant as it explores the role of urban planning in driving economic development in Lagos megacity. By critically examining current planning strategies and identifying implementation challenges, the research provides valuable insights for urban policymakers and stakeholders. The findings will help refine urban planning practices to foster sustainable growth, attract investments, and improve residents’ quality of life, thereby contributing to the long-term economic development of Lagos.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to evaluating the impact of urban planning on economic development in Lagos megacity. It focuses on urban infrastructure, planning policies, and their economic implications, without extending to other urban management issues.
