Background of the study
Community-based organizations (CBOs) have long played a crucial role in local development by addressing gaps left by formal institutions. In Oyo West Local Government Area, these organizations are increasingly recognized as agents of change, especially in the realm of youth skill acquisition. Over the past decade, governments and international agencies have emphasized the importance of equipping young people with technical and vocational skills to reduce unemployment and foster self-reliance (Adebayo, 2023). CBOs operate as vital platforms where informal learning and hands-on training complement formal education. They offer tailored programs that respond to the local market needs, empowering youth with the competencies required to succeed in a competitive environment (Oluwole, 2024). The proliferation of these organizations in the area has attracted academic attention due to their unique approaches and community-based methodologies. Moreover, the collaboration between local stakeholders, private entities, and educational institutions further enhances these initiatives. However, despite their potential, there remain challenges such as inadequate funding, limited technical expertise, and infrastructural constraints that hinder their overall effectiveness. Scholars have noted that sustainable partnerships and governmental support are essential for the long-term success of such programs (Eze, 2025). The study situates itself within this context, investigating how CBOs contribute to skill acquisition and the extent to which their programs meet the aspirations of youth, ultimately serving as catalysts for socio-economic transformation.

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized role of community-based organizations in fostering youth skill acquisition in Oyo West, significant challenges persist. Many programs remain under-resourced and lack standardized curricula, leading to disparities in the quality of training provided (Akinola, 2024). Youth often find themselves inadequately prepared for the labor market due to these deficiencies, which contribute to high rates of unemployment and underemployment in the region. Furthermore, limited collaboration between CBOs and formal educational institutions exacerbates these challenges, restricting the scalability and sustainability of the training initiatives. Such gaps hinder the realization of the full potential of these organizations as instruments for youth empowerment (Bamidele, 2023). Consequently, there is an urgent need to critically assess the effectiveness of these organizations in meeting current skill demands and to identify strategies for enhancing their impact on youth development.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of CBOs in providing skill acquisition programs.

  2. To identify challenges and opportunities within existing youth training initiatives.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving program quality and sustainability.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are community-based organizations in delivering youth skill acquisition programs?

  2. What are the key challenges faced by these organizations?

  3. How can partnerships enhance the sustainability of youth training initiatives?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. CBOs significantly improve youth employability skills.

  2. Inadequate resources negatively impact the effectiveness of training programs.

  3. Strategic partnerships with formal institutions enhance program outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it contributes to the understanding of how community-based organizations can bridge the gap between education and employability. The findings will inform policymakers, educational planners, and local leaders on improving youth training initiatives and resource allocation. Moreover, the research provides empirical evidence that can be used to design more sustainable partnerships between public and private sectors, ensuring that the programs not only meet current labor market demands but also empower youth for future challenges (Adekunle, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing community-based organizations and their impact on youth skill acquisition in Oyo West Local Government Area, focusing solely on available programs and current challenges without extending to other regions or historical data.

Definitions of terms:

  • Community-based organizations: Local groups initiated and managed by community members for development purposes.

  • Youth skill acquisition: The process through which young individuals learn practical skills for economic empowerment.

  • Sustainability: The ability to maintain program effectiveness over time.
